My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Wild hair - a crazy action taken without due consideration, minimal planning and little support.....
How many of you "dogs" would rather pile tuna on deck than flat ones?
Based on SST info provided by Popeye, past experience and a fair weather forecast I am throwing my hat in the ring for a tuna hunt.
Saturday at Depoe Bay, first light, Seas and Swells permitting I'm burning out to '61 Degrees' and grinding some longfins. My mate tells me that we could stack flat ones up on the way in but she wants that hot tuna.
I know some of you want to do that on Sunday but that is too close to work and worry for my mate and me. We are Saturday tuna fishers or bust.
How about it Corrirod? Have boat? Need Tuna hunting lessons?
I can provide some tuna gear and tips on technique and locations. All I need is a running mate in another boat.
????????????

Well I don't know..........Let me think about it............... OK I'M IN !!!!!!!
I've really got to see a shrink about this!
Anyone at Ifish own an ICE store? Gas station? or perhaps either of the 2 that might offer financing options?
What time we leaving? Depoe Bay I assume?

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
I wish that I could oblige, but as you might recall from my "Newbi Nightmare" post, my big boat isn't up to the task. However, in the off chance that anyone joining you in the "tuna town trek" has space on board, I can be ready to go at "0 Dark 30" Saturday.

I hate to have to stick my thumb out for a ride, but my ocean fishing buddy moved to Santa Cruz and I've been stuck nearshore ever since. I obviously would share in fuel expenses, etc., I have my own float coat and gear, and I'm even house broken.
If anyone needs or can tolerate a tuna rider on Saturday, e-mail me or call me at 541/961-0516. I'm teaching hunter safety Friday night, but should be home by 9:30PM. I'll check the phone for messages.

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Cool, you guys rock! We are camping in the boat launch parking lot Fri night so we can just wake and bake.
Corrirod, 'Puffin' might have some ice in the freeze at the cabin. Are you set with riders? Looks like we might have a few volunteers. I'll call you later this eve to chat after work.
Need any jigs? or handlines? I have a little spare gear.
Man, why does this shheeeeyat get me so excited ... my hands are shakingnnndnddndd!
Whoo hooooo!

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Chum, you would be more than welcome on my boat if I didn't already have a crew lined up. I'll take your number with me in case one of them bails on me tomorrow though.
Not sure you'd want to ride with me anyway, my boat is really only the "spectators" boat. We watch all the other boats catch fish!

Corrirod and Pilar,
You're freakin' killing me! The latest forecast has Saturday much better than Sunday.
Damn, wonder if the crew would go for tuna instead? My boat, my decision, I say....
Okay, you two, I may make the call to meet you guys up there Saturday morning, probably just put in Friday night and wait for you guys...if I'm there, I'm there, if not good luck.
time for a conference call....

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Damn glad to see you folks have safety in mind. I'd ask if there was an empty seat in your boat but my daughter has a ballet performance on Saturday and that's one of only a few things that is more important than fishing! BTW, I got my razor limit this morning in about 15 minutes once I found out the right spot! Oh, dinner is gonna be good! The first one bit me pretty good on the end of my finger and I bled the whole time I was out there, but that's the sacrifce you must expect for the rewards. Yum Yum!

Corrirod,
Thanks for keeping me in mind as a rider on Saturday. I'll keep my fingers crossed that one of your riders decides to drop out.
Regardless, I hope the trip goes well for all.

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Im in - havent had a chance to go after halibut this year, so was going to do that, but I also havent had a chance to fish the high seas with the mighty Pliar, ever. I always look forward to meeting new people.. I have never met an Ifisher that I don't like... thanks
Myself and my ugly green boat will be there at... 5:00 AM??
Also, should I bring Halibut gear, does anyone know a Halibut spot close to the way in or out to tuna town. (with a Depoe Bay departure??)

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Carkington! I think I need a 12-step program.
Boy is it going to be hard to get any work done today!
NOAA forecast for Sat: NW WIND 15 KT... WIND WAVES 2 FT... NW SWELL 5 FT AT 13 SECONDS N AND 8 SECONDS S.
NWS forecasted weather on the beach: 68 degrees, partly cloudy and W wind building to 6mph by noon and 10mph by 4pm.
As far as Pilar's ballet performance... Steve, isn't that more like a pep squad? Whole lot of shoutin' and jumpin' goin' on!
The only dance I'm doing Sat is the HAPPY DANCE!
See you guys there!

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Pilar and bunch,
I made a few calls last night to the charter boys -- I'm not encouraged -- may just stick with halibut Saturday....I don't want to, but I may just wait until next weekend to pursue tuna.
I asked one guy in Depoe how he did? His reply "pretty good" -- so how many did you get? "seven". In my book, that's lousy for a charter. I'm going to make a few more calls later today -- Popeye should have a report as well from out of Newport.
I also don't like what I'm seeing on this chart -- this is as bad as I have seen it for a while now -- http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/monterey/sstmaps/sst2.gif
60 degrees barely at the 125....that's a lot of fuel to burn for a few fish...man, that NW wind is just relentless this year....

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Sea squid, thanks for the wet blanket.
Lets see, weather or hmmmm 65 degree water ...
Weather or or hmmm reports of fish caught in close.
Fishing reports are in large measure dependant on effort as well as abundance. If a large group fishes hard and catches few then you can conclude that the fish are scarce. If only a few boats fish (or in the case of 7/7 none) and you get bad reports then you have to wonder about bad luck or fishfinding skill.
I'll take weather. As mentioned elsewhere windfree days are hard to find and minimal wind days have almost never coincided with weekends this summer.
Please recall the similar doom and gloom that preceeded the 64 fish trip in early July. No fish caught yet in Oregon, N. Ca. charters not catching any, etc, etc .....
On July 7 we were hell bent on the 125 line because of temperature below par that day too. It's a good thing my Mate can spot fish because we would have driven right by them 30 miles out and went the additional 20 miles for maybe nothing. Once my mate started following the birds we started stacking fish. 'Puffin' watched me catch 12 before he even got bit. We were fishing the same water, with the same gear. So luck plays a role too.
I'm gambling on the structure that seems to attract these ocean wanderers at the '61 degree' spot.
I understand you have guys in your boat chomping for a sure thing Halibut vs. a maybe Tuna. So I agree that what we see is not worth changing your plans.
For me though it is all about the hunt. A hunt that will be eased by long period swells and a calm morning. Let me ask you this SS, how will you feel when I post another 'wall of woe' picture?
Part of the charm of fishing is the uneven results. I'm willing to pit my experience and instincts against the location of biting fish. It's all part of the game. Win or lose, dead fish or empty handed, it's the game that keeps me coming back.
And as far as gas burned vs fish caught, just go buy your 3 or 4 day old tuna off the troller boat next to the boat launch. At a $1.50 a pound it's a great deal. Only one problem .... you don't know where that fish has been.
My $0.02

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
Pilar,
I know, I know....the flat ocean is what is killing me -- I see Sunday's forecast has improved.....hmmm....it sure would be fun to go with all you guys....I'm pretty sure I'm going to go a couple of times next weekend, but what will the ocean be like? Man, if I had a crystal ball...and, I can't even fish for halibut! Should I stay or should I go!
You still may see me tonight .... after a stop to see Popeye.
good luck.

Steve: Safety in numbers, man... Do you have guys to run with on Sunday?
Oh, yeah, Corrirod's got it so bad, he'll probably be out there again, huh?
Hey, you could always bang the butts and then come on out and play with us if you have the fuel capacity.
Hope to see you!

Dang,
I feel like If I don't go tomorrow I'm going to end up getting banned from this site -- ala *********....
Actually I don't know if anybody is going Sunday -- I was going to wait and see how you folks did....I've been "out there" before by myself -- a lonely feeling indeed, and not very smart to be sure....

Steve, you've got mail! Check it out and let me know what you think.
Fish where you want bro and happy hunting. I vote for long distance pursuit on calm ocean.
For any of you that got the email attachments with the weird filenames change them to AUG20.exe, AUG22N.exe and AUG22S.exe and then they will work fine.

The decision is easier if yer flat tag is full
Mine ain't and I'll be takin' the offer of good ol' Kurt on the Threemuch to put a hurt to BFB and maybe a long fin or a shiney fish to boot.
Hey, luck happens
Crabbin is closed in the ocean and we aint gonna mess with those bay bisquet eaters this time....
Tuna, I'm hoping.... The warm water is closer in the North....
Garibaldi, here we come....

Re: My careful carkulations .. Tuna?
I hope you guys get what we got today... pretty dang flat. We did the ranch in 1:20 and probably could have done it quicker. The three of us landed 9 FB's 48", 40" and 38" kept. The plan was to head to tuna town afterwards but after I entered the numbers the gps said that we were 38 miles away  . I'm fairly new to the ranch and didn't realize how far south it is. So we headed N.W until we were about 40 miles from the jaws, but the water got progressively colder the further we went (55 at the ranch, 52 when we stopped) and it was already noon so we bagged it. Anyways, the ocean was nice and hopefully you guys we get into some tuners tomorrow... Joe

Hey Mr. Fisherman!
Long time no chat. What's up with the boat-buying venture?
My BFB tag's not full, but I prefer the bullets to anything I've fished yet... both in the catching and in the eating - so that makes my decision easier!
Here's to ya! Have a wonderful time.
