Pliar...
did you ever see my Zihuatanejo pic in the " Tuna, Sat 8-10..." thread, RE: Shawshank Redemption? I never saw a response and was curious.

Re: Charlie Tuna - 08/21/02
Sorry, Uglygreen I did not get back to you. You are surrounded by Sails, one of my favorites for big game, jump and thrash fun. I have caught these devils in the stream off the Keys but not in Mexico.
The place is for real though, maybe Steven King fished there once. Looks fabulous, maybe I should ask my girl if she wants to vacation there someday. I can hear it now
uh ... yeah!

Uglygreen ,
I saw you a few weeks ago at Depoe Bay you were chasing Tuna. I asked you what channel you were on vhf.I tried to call you several times to get a report on Mr. Charlies whereabouts but you never answered. I know it was really rough that day glad to see you made it back safe. How did you do?

Re: Charlie Tuna - 08/21/02
UG,
Tell me that's not the open bow of a sled you're standing in, 25 miles out in the ocean! I want to catch a tuna so bad I ache in eleven places, but I don't think I'll ever take my sled *that* far. Enlighten me so I can quit having bad dreams.

Re: Charlie Tuna - 08/21/02
Sled... not
The ugly green boat is a Almar sounder, aluminum deep vee planing hull, full transom, off shore bracket mounted Yahama powered, foam filled, well stocked fish catchin machine.
For Ocean trips it comes equipped with spare everything (spark plugs / fuel filters, spare handheld GPS and VHF, etc...), an extra 30 gallons fuel on top of the 55 gallons internal, and myself (of course)... it is a very strong and virtually unsinkable boat... with the hull design it handels chop better than the 26' wellcraft offshore I used to drive, and with the full transom and offshore bracket it is a very safe ocean boat... when the weather is nice in the summer obviously.... on the ocean we wear life jackets all the time (the easy to wear Mustang inflatables) and try to take few chances...
To awnser the question, the ugly green fishin machine is both designed and equipped for this sort of thing...obviously within reason, and you have to use your brain... much better than some of the craft I have seen doing similar things.

Three tuna trips this year: 21, 12, and 50+ fish

Re: Charlie Tuna - 08/21/02
That all makes good sense. I like the "extras" you carry. I've been thinking of getting a spare gps since I'm starting to rely on it more and more. I spend a lot of time on the inland side of Vancouver Island up near Port Hardy, and have become pretty equipment conscious. I try not to do anything foolish, but I have had the fog move in between me and home. GPS's aren't just nice, they're a necessity.
I used to have an Arima, and while mine wasn't an ocean boat, at least I felt okay venturing out a little ways on nice days - the flat kind with little tide exchange. Never made it to the rockpile, but I did get down to Seal Rock a few times. Now I have a 21ft Jetcraft Whitewater (350 Chev/Kodiak pump) which handles the rivers nicely, but I find I've given up the ocean. Aren't there any easy choices in this game?
At any rate, I really appreciate it when you guys list the equipment you feel is necessary and the other steps you take to maximize safety and fun. It helps us all think about the things we *need* to play the game. When I was flying, I did the obligatory preflight every time, and worked through a checklist as well. I've found that is just as important heading out on the water, and it's been easy to let the habit carry over.
83 fish in three outings? You make my mouth water!
Good luck - have fun - stay safe - and thanks for the info.

Re: Charlie Tuna - 08/21/02
Thanks Skein... Ive put a lot of thought in to how to do it right.. also have learned a lot from folks like Pliar and others who have many years of expirence...
I used to fly... cant afford it (airplane rental) anymore.. but am willing to trade airplane time for fishing time... any takers???
Hey everybody... perhaps we should put togther a "Salty Dogs Ocean Safety Checklist" for ourselves and others... might save a life someday???

Re: Charlie Tuna - 08/21/02
U.G.,
The checklist idea = GENIUS! I live in Idaho, don't hit big blue every week like some of you. A checklist might save a life (maybe mine). Please post it, and at least we can use it as a baseline for equipment I know the rule of 2 (2 of everything), however having a list is awesome. Thanks in advance.
