Default Wednesdays Depoe Bay tuna report...

Corrirod and I took off at 6, we went to the warm spot 20 miles to the NW. and started trolling out the 45 line. Rod caught one about 30 miles out.....and then nothing till we got out to the 125. It was not till then the green water started to clear up. We picked up a few in this area....but it was sloooowww.
So we started trolling in, the water never dropped below 60 degrees until we were 30 miles out.
We came across some charters in this area, and we picked up a few more.....but just a single ever hour and a half.

We ended up with 10 between the two of us, they were real nice fish though.
Back to the dock at 6......time for a nap.

Thanks for going Rod.

Wak, thanks for the report. I can only imagine how good that stuff is tasting. MMMmmmmmmmmmmm. The water is looking a little warmer on the SST but still in that SW to NE line that has been there a while. It kind of leaves Cape Lookout and south near the beach in the cold.

Thanks Wak for the report....

So, what to do? Hmm... I'm taking people Saturday to the pile for halibut, but what about Sunday?

The forecast looks pretty good for a tuna trip...but, I really don't want to burn a bunch of fuel for few if any fish...my gut is telling me that warm water might move in a tad over the next few days....or is that more just extremely wishful thinking?

Anybody else considering Sunday out of Depoe Bay?

I'm guessing it's the ranch and tuna town for me also. We'll see....

Wak decided not to embarass me in his post buy I must tell the truth......his boat spanked my boat again! We only landed 3 fish and I released one of those cause I felt bad (fell off the bleed line actually-- )

Anyway, we had a good time but the fish were spotty. No real schools. Had some fun messing with the sharks and man were there alot of them.

One thing that is really curious is a spot that Wak caught his last fish at about 30 miles out. There were several charter boats, and a couple of sport boats, in that location and it just so happens to be the exact (and I do mean exact by GPS standards) same spot we caught fish on our first trip in July and the same spot we caught a double on a second trip with Sturgn. Mmmmmmm. For some reason there is always fish there. I'm going to see if I can get the coords. off the GPS and see what might be causing the fish to hang around there. It was strange also that we went from greener water at 35 miles into that spot which was blue water at 30 miles and then right back to green water again within a couple of miles inland of that.

Well, time to get ready for tomorrow and Saturday. May have to make another run. Aaagghhh, this fever is killing me!

Had a great time Wak, see you again soon!

I'm looking to go to tuna town tomorrow also. I'll be by myself so would love to run with some other guys. I'll be in a 21' Reinnell walkaround, white with blue stripe listening to ch. 77. PLEASE HOOK ME INTO SOME BULLETS! This will be my first trip of the year due to the horrible ocean this year.

Corrirod, so you have those numbers handy, yes?

I have noticed the same thing about a spot I call '61 degrees'. Only my observations span 3 years. We find fish and when I check the plotter, we are very close to '61 degrees'. This has happened too many times to be a coincidence. BTW this spot is about 30 miles out of Depoe.

I'll show you my numbers if you show me yours.

Rod,
Don't know exactly the spot that you're talking about, but I just pulled up my Nobeltec and went 30 miles in line with the 45/125, punched in, and went into 3D Bathy mode and there is a weird looking spire there that is 220' high and about 1 mile in length. Hmmmmm!

'61 Degrees' is at N44 54.968' by W124 39.342'

What does the bottom look like there, Popeye? Why is this spot a chicken of the sea magnet?

Did I mention that Pelagic fish like structure on the bottom even when it is thousands of feet under water?

Pilar,
That is right dead-on a cliff, on the inshore side of a huge high spot of about 400'. It also has some very interesting structure to it. It is 9.75 miles nw of the spot I was talking about.

This is the spot I was talking about.

44 59.306
124 42.202

Uglygreen, this was the spot that I pulled off and immediately hooked up with a double and then had nothing for a couple hours. Sturgn kept heading west to Tuna Town.

So here's the stats for that location:

1st trip: 12 fish taken by my boat and tons more by others, several commercials circling this same spot.

2nd trip: 3 fish by my boat. 2 on before I even got all the lines out.

3rd trip: 1 fish north of the spot a couple of miles by my boat, a double by Wak a mile west of the spot, and a handline single by Wak right on the spot. Several charters, couple of sport boats and a commercial working the area.

I see a trend here!

Great info and thanks for the gps ##. I have been logging my numbers on the chart for the last 3 years of every successful tuna trip and there are some areas that are producing way more than others. I will put these in the mix and see how it compares with my catches.

BTW..if anybody would like to put high spots, favorite areas, reefs etc. for visual references on the Terrafin maps, the good folks at Terrafin would be glad to do it. Sometimes it is really convenient to see your reference point or favorite area on the map and compare it to SST pics and the warm water changes. I had them put Depoe bay on and they said just let'm know for other locations. Maybe Pilars the "61 Degree Spot", and Corrirod's honey hole.

Good fishin to all that are attending the big church this weekend. I will be to the ranch and then the fun will begin. Most likely poke around Spencers Island area and who know after that. Still waiting for the latest sst pics.

Is 77 the prefered channel for this board??

Has anyone spotted the commercial troll fleet out there yet. Just wondering where they are working lately. Any numbers on that would be greatly appreciated.

They were trolling north right on the Tuna Town mark. We saw a total of 3 boats strung out over several miles but all right on the 125 line. There was one other commercial we saw as we came in that was closer to the waypoint I posted on the other thread.

Corrirod

Was that the spot just past where all the commercials were (the ones that we thought were Tuna fishing) on the way out. On the day (I think it was a Wednesday) that you were about ten minutes behind Sturgn, and myself who were about 5 minutes behind Marty going out of Depoe Bay? I think you had to run back up to the store for, or were waiting for, someone in your group to get a licence? If so, I noticed that spot also. Unfortunatly, I had to send my main GPS back to Lorance for service and lost all my waypoints.

I would like those GPS coordinates if you find them, thanks.
