Default Where to find a Newport Nook?

I've been to the RockPile, down off Waldport, and up North off the Lighthouse, but am unable to find a King to bite my line. I had thought that fishing got good in August, but it has been shut down for me. I have trolled at 50/75/100/120 ft and mooched at the Pile in locations that have produced Chinook before, and have trolled off Waldport and the lighthouse at a range of depths and have come up with nothing. (Note: My current finder is a piece of trash and I haven't yet invested in a new one)

Anybody have any thoughts on where I should look? Do the Alsea fish school up outside before the run? Shouldn't there be fish hanging out at the Pile? What about any run that still occurs up the Yaquina?

I am desparate here, I thought this would be the year I would bring home a 35+ lb. King and I am down to my last offshore fishing weekend coming up.

Orca; I did okay off the light house in 225 ft. The commercials were working on out in 240+. I used a green and white hoochie with a piece of herring, on a diver a long ways back. I tried a down rigger for a while and no luck. I marked a lot of fish out deeper but only hooked a big silver. The nooks I caught had no eggs or milt skeins in them. Either springers or next years fish. 20 lb. and a 14 lb. The silver was almost as big as the bigger chinook.

You might try verrrry long legths from the downrigger...2-3 fathoms or even longer. Chinook can be very spooky at times, as you all know.

Orca, there should be alot of us Ifishers at the Rockpile tomorrow and Saturday so if you stay on Channel 77 I'm sure people will share their successes. It sounds like you're doing everything right, you just need to be doing it at the right time and right place. That's where multiple Ifish boats can help.

Just an idea.

Thanks,

I will be out Saturday and possibly Sunday. I hope to hear a lot of catching on 77. Talk to you out there.
