Rough waters off Nehalem on Saturday
I thought I'd tell everyone the 6 foot swells off of Nehalem were pretty choppy at 7:30am on Saturday... as we went past the 'jaws' of the jetty, the overcast weather and choppy water looked pretty forboding. we got out to ~120 feet of water, set down 2 downriggers, but didn't bring in any salmon... we didn't want to get caught out in the ocean in heavy seas with a heavy ebb tide and 6 foot roller coming in on standing waves.. so we played it safe and did some combat fishing at the 'jaws' with a a couple dozen other boats. Jockeying for a safe position relative to all the boats proved to be fatiguing for Lou and I, so we called it quits and headed in after 3 or 4 passes at the 'jaws'.
We heard some else went out to 200+ feet and landed 5 chinook. Those fish are going to taste pretty good, after the beating they took to land them...
I hope, and look forward to better weather next week for some halibut fishing... maybe our combined wishful thinking will bring us blue skies and calm seas.... I've repeatedly been told that August was suppose to be the month of 'oily' seas and blue skies.... I haven't seen any of these kinds of days yet...
I'll post my pictures in a couple days. Cheers, Craig
