Default Role Call Newport Aug. 23, 24

Looks like another Hali weekend, We will be out in a 24' cruiser barnagat named Mustang Sally. Hoping that old blue will lay down and let us asault charlie tuna for a day. Keep your fingers crossed and throw them bones. If anyone else is considering targeting Charlie and wants some company let me know and we will get together and for the asault.

Seasquid will be out Saturday, which port depends on the water temp. I'm tagged out on halibut, but have people who want to go. I'm more interested in water temp and ocean conditions --

I'm considering joining Threemuch at Garibaldi if the water temp stays as is, as compared to Depoe Bay -- hopefully bag a halibut or two for the crew and move out for tuna.

Anybody considering a tuna run Sunday? If the ocean is nice I would prefer Depoe Bay (closer for me), but may end up in Garibaldi -- warmer water closer. Of course, I believe we are in for minus tides this weekend, which would make Garibaldi a bit dicey.

time will tell.

I'm in for both days but not sure which port to go out of. Has anyone caught tuna out of Garibaldi this year? Everyone I've talked to that has gone out of that port has either not found tuna or found them 55-60 miles out, even with the warm water being so close.

If the weather won't cooperate fully then I will probably go out of Newport for Hali's. I hate the Garibaldi 800+ft. crap. Too much work, not much fun.

There is whole lot more to finding Tuna than finding warm water. Even though the water is anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand feet deep, the bottom structure is important.

The edge of the continental shelf drops off steeply. In general this occurs 30 to 50 miles offshore all along the coast. It has been my experience that Tuna can often be found along these sharp dropoffs. Sea mounts and other large depth changes also attract open water fish like the tuna, because they concentrate the feed.

This is why we often find fish near Nelsons Island and along the 100 fathom line off Depoe. The warm water/cold water breaks coincidentally happen along these same dropoffs.

If you could figure out where the dropoffs are off Garibaldi, you could find the fish there too.

Well, the Julie Rose is chasin' flatties Fri/Sat. Wishen for albi's for seconds but all my charts (including subscription) shows the Tuna water 100+ miles. Mike on the Blitz went 60-65 Sat. and only got 2 for 20 people. He said he couldn't find anything above 58 degrees. Hope to see some of you. If your at South Beach say hey.
Cheers,
Bruce

Pilar, my brother from Hawaii has concurred with your statement that it's important to find the steep changes in depth, like the continental shelf or sea mounts. Alan fishes for the large Yellowfin Tuna with depths of 3000 to 4000 ft. That may sound deep, but Hawaii is a volcanic mount off the ocean floor.

I guess 3&5 is the story for this weekend.

I love the 3 and plan on being off the water long before the 5 happens.

I'll be leaving Newport at O dark thirty on Friday and Saturday. I'll have my ten year old (who landed an 80 pounder earlier this year) with me and will be starting at the north end of the rockpile. Chicken Ranch is out of my range.

I'll be monitoring 77 if any of you find them somewhere else. In my dream we land the halis early and head for the lighthouse for chinooks.

Good Luck!!

Pilar, you are right on about the bottom contours. They are essential to bringing nutrients to the top of the water as currents hitting them make for some upwellings that attract bait and then the preditors. If you look at the charts it is amazing to see the sea mounts, canyons and underwater mountain ranges straight off Depoe. Then look straight off Garibaldi and it has really no high spots until you drop off the continental edge, which is a little too far for most of us.

Plus, everyone keeps talking about blue water..., but give me a good temp break anyday and the fish will be there. To have both is the real ticket to a mother load.

Good fishin to everyone this weekend

Moby, tell me more about these Lighthouse Nooks. Have you found some there? How far out, how deep of water, how deep were the fish? I need a Salmon fix now!
