Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Anyone up for a tuna run on Friday and/or Saturday? Of course it will depend on the weather.
I'm not sure I'm going to trust the forecast anymore!!

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
I am ready to head out anytime there is a break. Friday and Sat. doesn't look that great..........3 and 7 and on Sat. 4 and 6 (or are these backwards). I was out yesterday out of Depoe and it was not very good running weather. We went out in a lull at 11:00 and by 12:30 it was howling. Seas very choppy, mixed up with a good 5 and 3 to 4 chop. I really think the outside water would be worse. I think if everyone can be patient a little longer the warm water will be much closer and the trip more enjoyable. There is some 64 and 65 degree water getting a little closer, but these dang NW blows are keeping it below the Heceta banks.
I like what Pilar says about another Ifish goal of something different and bigger, ie.....bluefin, swordfish or bigeye. I am ready !!

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Puffin asked me to post that he is for the tuna this weekend if at all possible. I think he is fully manned but is looking for the wolfpack action. Depoe Bay, most likely.
If you want in E-mail me for a phone #.

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Marty,
You are right, I was basing my trip on yesterday's forecast of 3/2. I should've known there was joker at the forecast station just messing with me!
I may just go anyway for some salmon in the mornings. Anyone know if the mornings are calm enough right now?

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday the water out to about
30 fathoms (off Dopey Bay) was fishable with chop
and whitecaps outside 30 fathoms. I was talking to
JT on the "Tackle Buster" on Monday and he told me
that the commercial tuna fleet was off-shore about
50-60 miles. Said the wind was blowing out there
all night and the guys were having a hard time staying
in thier bunks!
JT has a really nice SSB with a HUGE antenna that
can reach out and touch those guys, so I trust that
he was telling me the truth (we swap fish info back
and forth all the time and he's always been square
with me at any rate!!).
The SST map that I usually look at is stuck on 08/07
for a date ... can anybody point me to an SST map
(preferably one of the free ones) where I can check
the surface temps? I'd appreciate it!
Thanks,
-assAssin-

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Here's terrafin's freebee. Nothing has improved. Warm water is within reach out of Garibaldi or the Columbia, but a long ways off from Newport or Depoe.

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Hey Kurt, thanks for the pointer!! You're right ...
looks like at least a 40-45 mile run out from Depoe
Bay to get at the tuna. Sure wish the South-
Westerlies would start blowing so that I could get
out to the tuna!! I'd like to make a couple of
overnight trips this year, but would feel a lot more
comfortable on my first couple of trips if I wasn't
so far out ... say 20 miles or so! I'm not sure
what difference it makes, but it's a feel good sort
of thing. I guess I wouldn't feel so vulnerable if
I was at 20 miles instead of 40-50 miles out!

FA-
Don't know what kind of boat you run, but your fears are probably well founded. Weather can change quickly, but I have found that even a really bad change, lots of wind, I can slug it out at 5-7kts for twenty or thirty miles. Fifty? Sixty? Not good.

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Don't anybody feel sorry for the the poor assasin and his "little tub"...............its the queen mary set up for serious fishing. My boat would almost fit on his deck, (almost). I'm hoping to crew on it one day it test the cat vs mono hull in that size boat and then in my next life (if I have more money), I may be able satisfy my desires for bigger and better.
Anyway, Mark, try the coastwatch site.....
http://cwatchwc.uscd.edu/cgi-bin/user/vcatalog.cgi
the code name is images
password is typhoon
I think it is the site that Terrafin gets its pics from, and then they enhance them a little. It gives two sst pics a day, everyday, although you may not see anything worthwhile because of the clouds. But it is well worth viewing. When the weather lays down a bit, I am planning to hit the tuna pretty hard for as long as the weather holds. Forward your phone number one of these days to my e-mail and we can exchange phone numbers, as I may be out 2 or 3 days before you get off work and I would gladly give you my info if it was needed. I have the boat back in the shop now doing some extra outfitting. Glad to see your boat back on the water.
Find em and Grind em

Hey Marty I couldn't get the URL to work. I don't think anybody feels sorry for the poor assassin. That Maxweld is one beautiful boat.

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Kurt-
I've got a 30' power catamaran with twin 250hp
diesels that I've run out as far as 35 miles in a
12 foot swell with a 30 (+-) knot wind before, but
I sure didn't like it!! The way I figure it, there's
no fish out there worth my life ... or even worth
getting the crap beat out of me!
If the tuna get in t within 25 miles, I'll be trying
a couple of overnighters to see if I like it. It's
not too big a deal at 20 miles if I don't ... I could
just pick up and run back to port in about an hour!!
My little tub runs about 28 knots when I'm running
with the swell ... and is pretty smooth to boot. It's
the run out that kills me. When I bring her up on
step she wants to pound so I gotta slow her down.
Usually to the 15-18 knot area. Takes a long time
to go 40+ miles at that speed!!
Sea ya,
-assAssin-

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Sleeper,
How did you know that I had a problem that needed
glueing together?? I didn't post anything HERE
about that, did I?
At any rate, it was a minor problem caused by a design
issue. My fault as I deviated so far from the original
plan/layout of the boat when I had her built. Andy
at Maxweld solved the problem, fixed the leak and had
me back in the water the same day!! Talk about customer
service!!! Just don't get any better than *that*!!!

assAssin, They say the mind is the second thing to go! You might check the ANDYCOHO thread "No tuna for me" started on 8/7/2002! I am sure it will refresh your memory.
I am not really psychic! Glad to hear you got it taken care of so easily & thoroughly.

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
assAssin,
Tell us what you think of your ride vs. a mono-hull. Does it slice through the chop, and how does it ride over the top of large swell and chop at say 45 degrees? I am considering buiding a 25 ft cat someday when I run out of other projects.

Re: Tuna on Friday/Saturday??
Orca,
It's not as sea freindly going into big seas as it
is either quartering the swell or running with it!
She takes a following sea extremely well. If I get
her "up on step" going into it though, she can be a
pounding little hussy!!
I really like her as a fishing platform! Very stable,
comfortable ride in almost *any* conditions at low
speeds when the hulls are in the "full displacement
mode".
