Reloading...
Anyone know of a good reloading set up? What I would need to get started? I am looking into reloading my own 30-06, 45 and 40 cal ammo. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Reloading...
Do a search.
There was a thread on here pretty recently.
Lee 50th Anniversary Kit. Everything you need $128.00
Yes, there are nicer, faster, and more expensive reloading options out there, but this is probably the best place to start.

Re: Reloading...
I thought the RockChukr was RCBS?
I picked up a complete reloading kit from RCBS and think that'd be the way to go. Of course, if you're willing to piece together a kit. . .you'll get more of what you need/want for just a bit more $$.

Re: Reloading...
Digital scale is the one must. You can be minimal on the rest, but the ability to throw a charge of powder on a scale and get an accurate reading in a short time is one of the best advances in reloading.
You can dip powder or throw powder onto a scale pan for the digital and get results quickly...Good Luck

Re: Reloading...
The RCBS rockchucker kit is a good way to go. You get most of what you need in one package. Toss the case lube and case lube pad and pick up a can of one-shot. Get a hand-priming tool (if you don't like the idea of priming on the press) - the RCBS and Lee ones are both good enough. Add dies, and materials, and you're reloading.
The beauty of the kit is you don't have to scour the internet and garage sales for 6 months to build up all the stuff you need. You get to build quality ammo right from the store.
I have a digital scale, but use the balance scale for most hand-measuring. I like the digital for setting up dies/powder measures to throw charges, but other than that, I rarely use it. To each his own I guess.
If it were me, I'd pick up dies for the rifle, then pick a couple bullets that you'd like to shoot, and start doing load development - you will likely see the value of reloading when you can tailor your own loads and do it for half the price of factory.

Re: Reloading...
go look at the difference in quality between the rcbs and the lee kits . hands down the rcbs is a better setup . i know people that have loaded thousands upon thousands of rounds with the rockchucker and the still look like new.

Re: Reloading...
The Lee kit is 1/3 the money, but it's much more than 1/3 the quality making it a great value. IMO, with a few exceptions Lee puts out quality equipment, it just isn't as fancy. The cheap feeling Challenger press that came with my Anniversary kit has probably loaded 5000 rounds without a problem and I still use it at times alongside my newer Lee Classic Cast press. Yes, RCBS makes great equipment, but I'd put that $70 Classic Cast press up against any similar single stage press, plus us Lee fans have more money to spend on powder and bullets

Re: Reloading...
What do you plan to reload?
I have a progressive and a single stage. I got a Lyman T-Mag Expert kit for X-mas. It has digital everything and comes with all sorts of tools that you'd normally have to buy seperately. I use this for all of my pistol and automatic rifle ammo. For hunting ammo, I use an RCBS Rockchucker. I like doing things one step at a time when I'm making my hunting ammo.
Once you get set up, the RCBS case prep station is a must. It cuts your case prep time by 2/3 and keeps your hands from cramping up using little tools to clean your brass.

Re: Reloading...
I was in your spot about 15 yrs ago and my wife got me a RCBS rockchucker kit for christmas. Its served my pretty well. There are things you will add and change out along the way, but it gets you off to a good start.
What ever you decide to start out with I highly recomend a rcbs case prep station right from the start. It makes case prep a pleasure instead of a dreaded task.

I would go this route as you also get your choice of one set of dies for one caliber also. Like everyone else says as you become more proficient or want to go into it a little more you can upgrade components. The Lee outfits will reload as well as the RCBS. You aren't going to be reloading 100 loads a night to begin with are you?
