Default I have a tuna question?

From everyones past experiences......where are we at in the tuna season??? I know commercials sell tuna pretty much thru Sept. BUT, what happens in our world.
I know Marty talked of a Oct trip once. I also know the Northwester will start to ease up in Sept. .....
My concern is....if Aug. is the best month I need to put chores off, but if Sept. is best...then I can lighten up now.......????

Thanks Dan

Dan, our first trip last year was July 11 and the last on Sept 14th.

All of September is OK, the fish are still there. But look out for the big swell and unpredictable weather in late Sept.

Fish now bro, the lawn can wait!

In CA we fished tuna all the way until January during El Nino. I think we can probably count on the fish being around through september, maybe squeak a trip in October.

I am just hoping to get some decent weekend weather to get one trip in this year.

I have made Salmon trips in Sept and Oct and had a perfect ocean, but we always get a good southerly in the middle of Sept.
I could scream today......here they were forecasting wind, and my son went to the pile and back on a perfectly flat ocean, and now there is just a little chop, nothing to worry about at all.
I was just wondering if the fish become more scattered or they tend to be further from shore. I realize nothing is for sure.

I asked that same question last weekend. I was talking to Terry the skipper of the Umatilla.
He said the latest he can remember was a trip around Thanksgiving. He said into November is not unusual.

Wak'm

In 2001 my last trip was Sept 15 and in 2000 it was Oct. 22. The Batsford group out of Northern California contend that tuna show up in 59 degree water, but won't leave until it is below 55. My log book says we got fish on a temp break with 53.8 on the cold side and 55.6 on the warm side. My basic rule of thumb is..................when the weather lets you go out, do it!!!!! As the tuna will be there unless it gets really cold. Its reading the temp maps and zigging vs zagging that is the magic part. I think that is why I like it so much because its not a slam dunk like the chicken ranch.......its as much of a hunting trip as a fishing trip. The more people that hunt together the better it can get.

Lets do it

Marty

I know Pilar, I know --

Dang, that seems just a touch too much for a really good day -- nothing major obviously, but it sure would be nice to see 3 and 4....come on ocean you can do better! I'd be really encouraged if Sunday's forecast would be even less, but it looks more like building than diminishing.

Thanks guys..... Marty I understand what you are saying.....Half the fun is checking the temps, then plotting it out on the MapSource BlueChart I down loaded.........if we just get some weather and I get some time off.
When archery season opened, usually the poles go in the rack, but this year I am planning both.
