State would've been much better served taking it in settlement money and building a park and interpretive center.

I think it's a disgusting waste, sorry.

The state only got this money if it was used for removal. If they did not remove the wreck they did not get this cash. What may be interesting is how much it costs to remove both the Carissa, and the salvage platform when a summer storm that the boys from Florida are not expecting, lays it down on the beach next to the original wreck.

New Carissa. Coming to a port near you. With salvage platform attached.

Ever since we witnessed the trouble getting rid of the rest of that ship and the trouble the Navy had in putting her down, I have had this vision that sometime within my lifetime (and, I'm getting to be an old you-know-what), we will see that hulk come back again. I know, I know, but I just keep "seeing" it drifting back in, on the horizon and the theme song to The Twilight Zone playing in the background. Don

Lets ask the State to remove the remains of the Peter Iredale too. Can't believe they let that hulk remain there that long!

On the plus side, a bunch of local businesses have seen a pretty good chunk of change come their way.

I agree with TR on this one. Even if the money was not coming unless the hull is removed, it is still a waste of money.

I also agree with Southcoast student, this will bring much needed commerce to the bay area............... in the short term.

I believe over all, in the long term, the south coast commerce would have benefited much more by leaving it in place.

I guess I just don't get it........

Yeah, it's a waste of time and money, but the powers that be might have actually learned something from it, like:

1. Attempting to blow up a ship to burn off the fuel is a bad idea.

2. Letting the ship's insurer dictate the overall handling of the situation is also a bad idea.

3. Turning the whole thing into a media circus is REALLY a bad idea.

4. Anything stuck in the surf along the Oregon coast should be left alone.

5. The only good that came from it was The Oregonian's New Carissa haiku contest.

You come unbidden
Wreak havoc and won't leave
Like my wife's mother

Such silliness.

There are tens of thousands of derelicts in the ocean, but we just have to spend a fortune to get that one outta here.

Everywhere else they go out of their way to sink ships to provide structure, but here we go the other route.

Insanity.

A couple of weeks ago there was an article (Either on the net or the O, can't remember) about how the contractor has been able to find 95% of what he needs locally and the dollar figure that is getting put into the local economies was staggering. I bet those businesses are glad it's getting removed. I guess since it doesn't have an impact on us flatlanders we think it's a waste....

An absolute waste of money. I bet they cause more pollution cutting the darn thing up than it ever caused when it ran aground. Must have been some think tank that put this together. Sorry folks, this one is a loser. Next, they will want to remove the peter iredale.

Wow! I can't believe how many of you support the idea of letting people drop off their derelict boats on public beaches- and then walk away without any sort of liability.

Now that I think about it, my buddy has a junker truck that needs to go. I'll tell him to tow it down to Cannon Beach and shove it into the sand.

Nobody here seems to mind that...

Just a tad difference between a ship wreck and a junky truck.

Junk is junk. Littering is littering.

I have seen the NC up close- it is an eyesore.

The shipper's insurance rep stood there on camera and promised to remove it. I am glad they paid up on their debt and that thing is going away.

Wow. And I can't believe someone would submit such and "apples/oranges" opinion!

As for the opinion posted concerning us "flatlanders", this flatlander is an Oregonian and there-for has as much ownership and right to an opinion concerning Oregon's beaches as anyone.

This flatlander also depends, in part, on his income from the tourist business generated on the coast. This flatlander believes the long term benefits of the New Carrisa being a tourist draw stand to far out live and out pace the short term benefits of it's removal.

To each our own, I guess, eh??

I also agree. Comparing the New Carissa to the Peter Iredale is unreal.

Tongue in cheek was the comment. Had to match your truck comment.

Heck, I am surprised they did not turn the thing into a MR.

When ships go aground, the owners should be responsible for any toxic spillage or other environmental damages or threats. Sock it to 'em.

But the Oregon Coast is well known for its shipwrecks. They have always happened, and always will. Leave 'em be.

Excellent post Jack.

I wish they would spend the money on repairing our roads and redoing our bridges. Much better stewardship.

But where do we draw the line? If a 75' crab boat loses power and ends up on Rockaway Beach- buried in the sand like the New Carissa, we are just to leave it?

How about the 20 foot uninsured glass boat which ends up smashed against the jetty? Can the owner just walk away?

I think the line is way too fuzzy to allow such a thing to happen.

The settlement stated that the money would go towards removal only. Otherwise, the money would never have been paid to the state.

A couple of thoughts:
I wonder how long the wreck would have remained if it washed up in front of the Bandon Dunes?
Why get rid of it? Sell the hulk to a developer and build oceanfront condo's on it.
When it was first stuck a couple of people at Jetcraft wanted to paint Alumaweld on it.

When fishing is slow, we like to bicker with each other over the silliest things, then when that gets boring we like to blame the state and federal government for whats wrong in the world.

If it were in Portland they could have attached a "for sale" sign on it and someone would have stole it.

Think how many meth heads we could of got rid of in the surf...

Just kidding, of course - then our friends from USCG would have been put in harms way to save them.
