Ever used a cordless drill for Hali bait checks?
We fished the hill last week and we've been running Penn 330's which barely covers the depths we fished but after hearing a lot of electric reels doing bait checks we were trying to think of a way to replace the crank nut with something like an allen head bolt.
My buddie heard of someone who had done this and we've called Ollie Damon and they've heard of the idea but never had someone actually create something.
Rumor has it that it works fairly well, just bring a couple of extra batteries so I was curious if any SD's had come up with some sort of way to use a drill that can plug into the side of a reel to be able to do a check bait?
I'm going to get with a machinist buddy to see what he thinks.
One guy on our boat last week brought a home made electric reel out of a windshield wiper motor and brought his own deep cycle battery, slow but sure (and ugly).
I'll keep you guys posted if I find something that really works

There was a post here of someone who did that exact thing. I don't remember if it was last year or the year before...or even before that. Do a search you may find it.

Re: Ever used a cordless drill for Hali bait checks?
A friend of mine has a set up for his Penn's. I think it is just a socket attatchment that fits the bolt head on the reel handle??? I have seen "fork set-ups also that just go on each side of the handle, much like the device at the tackle store that spools on the line...

Re: Ever used a cordless drill for Hali bait checks?
Thanks for the search Stowaway, this gives me some more ideas.
My boss is replacing his garage doors and garage door openers, I had one go out in my shop and said if he didn't care I pick up the old one and use it, he said sure. After hearing about the windshield wiper motor idea he said to take both and maybe we could use one for bait checks

Re: Ever used a cordless drill for Hali bait checks?
I used my 90 degree cordless drill for bait checks last Fri & Sat.
Worked great. 48 oz 750 and I could get 3 bait checks on each battery or 2 bait checks and a pingpong paddle.
Special fitting you can buy that fits penn reels. Costs about $25. For the life of me I can not remember the web site but I did make a post last year with the information in it.
You just replace the reel handle screw with thei fitting and you have a hex head to slide your cordless drill onto.

Found it

Enjoy
I will tell you that having a counter balanced handle will be better. I bought a replacement handle for my 340 and then put it on my 113H. Stopped all the vibration.

Re: Ever used a cordless drill for Hali bait checks?
I've been using my 18v cordless drills on my Penn 345's for this for about 3 years now and it works great.
Found the replacement screw/pins online at a place that sold electric reels... and the part (same as the "Dreel" mentioned in earlier posts) was sold as a spare for around $10 each. A 5/8 socket bit and you're all set.
Just watch the retrieve speed... they come up quick if you're not paying attention. They'll bring your gear up and hit the boat or the tip of the rod and rip your gear right off in a heartbeat.
Also, be sure to give your drill a good wash when you get back or it'll rust up in a hurry.
See ya out there!

Re: Ever used a cordless drill for Hali bait checks?
My brother has set up his reels with a 5/16" allen head set screw welded to a flat bar he has drilled tapped and screwed to his handles. Then he took a couple old DeWalt drills and wired them to his boat battery,no need for extra drill batteries just plug em in and go.

Re: Ever used a cordless drill for Hali bait checks?
I just hire a little kid to reel up for me while I drink a beer and coach him.
Sure it costs me 1 dollar for every bait check, but it's worth it.

Yeah! Isn't that what rookies are for. I had a old 16.8v cordless with 2 dead batteries, jerry riged it to my 12v Boat battery, it started smoking, amperage or voltage wasn't right, if anybody has a old 12v/14.4v cordless, give it a try on your Boat Battery, I'm courious if it'll work.

Re: Ever used a cordless drill for Hali bait checks?
BIG BIG THANKS to all for the idea. Went to the work bench to see how I could adapt my reel & it was easy. Actually I lucked out. The handle to my reel is attached with a standard 7/16" cap nut. I just put a 7/16" socket on it & a socket adapter in my drill & presto I have a functioning no work fast retrieve halibut reel. Now all I need is some quota for the CR & I can give it a field trial.

12v dewalts wok perfect on the boat battery. Also 12v dewalt batteries power my fish finder in the raft.Works both ways.

I'm having it sent 2nd day air, I'm thinking more now on getting the drill wired or plugged into the boat so there's no battery issue.
Did you get the reel you were thinking of? The fitting only fits certain models, I'm thinking of runnig big crank on one reel and drill on another for comparrison
