Salty Dog Challenge Winner is....
Well it certainly wasn't me! :depressed:
I was too concerned with getting tuna, which was a complete waste of time out of Garibaldi.
Friday--got out early in crappy seas, fished for hali's with no luck for approx. 1 1/2 hours, we were in 61 degree water so decided to go find tuna, went out 35 miles temp went 61, 62, 61, 60. Couldn't find any blue water. Came back in and tried for Hali's with no luck. Did land 2 lings-17, 13 lb. Stopped outside the jetty and trolled for salmon and landed/released 1 beautiful native coho.
Saturday--water was a little better. Found my old GPS coordinate for Hali and landed 2 twins very quickly. Both 43 1/2" and both 37 lbs. Went looking for tuna again. Went out 40 miles with no blue water, started coming back and ran into another boat at 35 miles who was headed out for tuna. They said they caught tuna last week at 44 miles. We turned around again and headed back out to 48 miles but still no blue water. :depressed: Tucked my tail between my legs and headed back in. Stopped west of twin rocks and trolled. Picked up one 6lb nook and that was that. Didn't crab because wife said, "no more crab!"
So...who was the winner of the Salty Dog Challenge? I saw a very nice post by Sturgn who had a nice variety of fish on those 2 days. Pilar had some nice days with big fish.
Let's bare'em and share'em folks. List out your 2 days catch on this thread and I'll get the trophy warmed up!

Hey Corrirod, it wasn't clear from your post if you actually put the tuna gear in the water, just that you didn't hit blue water. There have been plenty of fish caught in the green water, so I was just wondering......

one day total... one Hali, one coho, three lingcod and a 20' duckworth. Didn't have a tag for the duck so we released it in the bay

Re: Salty Dog Challenge Winner is....
What rod/reel combo are you folks using for the halibut and lings? I'm looking to get a new setup and was wondering what was everybody's choice for bottom fishing.

Re: Salty Dog Challenge Winner is....
Mark Mc, we did put the lines in both days but to no avail. First day we put them in and trolled from the 35 mile 60 degree water to the halibut hole and the second day we trolled from the 48 mile mark to the 40 mile mark in 62 degree water.

Re: Salty Dog Challenge Winner is....
I use either an Ugly Stick paired with a 9/0 penn senater, or my favorite is an Berkly Sturgeon rod IM/7 and an Ambasedeur Morrum reel. At the rock pile this week I just used a Im-7 Salmon rod and an Ambassadeur 6500c3, thats my favorite bottom fishing rig when going for seab/lings.

Re: Salty Dog Challenge Winner is....
I ahd an ugly stick with a Penn 345GTI loaded with 80lb. It was great for halibut! Unfortunately there's an Albacore dragging it around off of Depoe Bay somewhere!

Re: Salty Dog Challenge Winner is....
Well, I caught a 40" Ling, 4 Halibut, 1 Sand Dab, 5 baby Salmon (released unharmed), and contributed to a harvest of about 7 gallons of Herring.....
I love my Penn 6/0 coupled with my BWB1160 whopper whipper for BFB.
By the way, Team Pilar also harvested 2 Reel Rock fish.... Took pictures. Johnboy was gonna keep one fer the mantle but decided to release it after a photo.
My biggest flattie for the two days was 54"
I'll post pics as soon as I get the film developed. gotta take them in this week..
Stay tuned....

Re: Salty Dog Challenge Winner is....
Went out 8/2 on the Serious Fun with 3 of his relatives. We got our 5 hali's, one lincod and one sable fish in about 1.5 hours. Then out for tuna. We got 32 tuna in a little over 2 hours and ran out of storage. It was the best tuna fishing in a while. We got half of them on the hand lines. Saw some big whales and the weather was great (a bit rough coming back in with the wind). We were tagged out for hali and we were to beat after the 3 hour run back and the 3 hours to clean the fish so we did not go out on 8/3.

Re: Salty Dog Challenge Winner is....
Pilar, I will send an e-mail to Serious Fun. I know we stored several cooridnates in the GPS. Basically we checked the sea temp and it was very unusual, there was a big dip towards shore of cold water off Depoe bay. Usually it seems that tuna town (off Depoe bay) has a dip inshore of warm water. We ended up due west of the chicken ranch apx 45-47 miles from Newport, which is about where we figured the closest 60 deg. water was. It was there and so were the fish. We could not keep our lines in the water. After hooking up, we got hit pulling lines in and putting them out. It was only with great restraint that we did not continue to fish and sink the boat by piling fish all over the deck. What a great day. Oh yeah, remember the black and purple jigs that have been so hot (we hammered them on our last trip with it). We could not get a single bite on them. We caught everything on lighter colors (yellows, glow combos, green/white feathers, etc...).
