Went out to the rockpile on Friday for my 3rd attempt at halibut fishing. My previous 2 attempts resulted in 1 skunk, and 1 turn back due to closed bar.
Well, 3rd time was definitly the charm. We drifted over a high part of the shelf in the early am of Friday and I hooked in and reeled up a monster ling. 42" long and it bottomed out the 25 lb scale we had. Forgot to weigh it at the dock, but it was probably a good 30-35#. Biggest ling I had ever seen, let along catch.
After a couple of snags in this area, we moved north and east a bit to get into flatter bottom. On the first drift through this area, I hooked into something that felt pretty good. Now I have never caught a halibut before, so I wasn't sure how to gauge the size. When the other guys asked how big it was, I said, "I think it might be a keeper".
15 minutes later, with myself at the gaff, and the skipper at the harpoon, we pulled a 60", 100+ lb fish into the boat. Needless to say, I was just a little bit excited. My first flattie ever, and it was a whopper!
Unfortunately, we never got an exact weight on the big halibut. The fish checker's chart said a 60" fish should weigh 109#.
I have some pictures, but as of yet they are undeveloped. I'll post em as soon as I can!
Matt.
P.S. Pilar, it was nice to finally meet you, and I'm pretty sure I saw Bait Boy out there, too
