Ocean Coho Season Closes Thursday Night
PORTLAND - Salmon fishery managers today decided to close the ocean sport coho season off the central coast Thursday night because the harvest quota will be met. Angling for chinook may continue
through Oct. 31.
The season for adipose fin-clipped coho was scheduled between Cape Falcon and Humbug Mountain for July 7 - Aug. 4 or until anglers harvested 22,500 coho. Through Sunday, July 28, biologists
calculated about 86 percent of the quota was met. Coho retention will officially end 11:59 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 1.
"By Thursday night, we calculated we would be at the quota or a little below," said Mike Burner, ODFW biologist with the ocean salmon program. "The ocean and weather conditions were less than ideal for
much of the season, but catch rates were good."
Burner reminded anglers that chinook angling remains open and should provide good fishing opportunities. By Aug. 1, anglers may fish for chinook off the entire Oregon coast. However, chinook fishing is not
allowed on Fridays or Saturdays north of Cape Falcon until Aug. 16. The popular salmon fishery in the mouth of the Columbia River from Buoy 10 upstream to Tongue Point opens Aug. 1 for both chinook and
adipose fin-clipped coho.
In addition, a two-day all-depth sport halibut season is open Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3.
Anglers should consult the 2002 Oregon Ocean Salmon and Halibut Sport Fishing Regulations and the 2002 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations for additional information on seasons, bag limits, and other
restrictions.
Bonneville Reservoir Closes to Sturgeon Retention Aug. 5
The sturgeon fishery between Bonneville Dam and The Dalles Dam will close to retention of the big fish beginning Monday, Aug. 5 because the catch guideline of 1,520 fish will be reached. Catch and
release sturgeon angling may continue for the rest of the year.
Sturgeon anglers in the Columbia River are reminded that with this closure no sturgeon may be retained from the mouth at Buoy 10 upstream to John Day Dam. The sturgeon fishery below Bonneville Dam
closed to retention July 25 and will remain closed through Sept. 30. The Dalles pool closed to retention July 13 through the end of the year. Sturgeon retention is allowed from the John Day Dam upstream to
McNary Dam until the catch guideline of 165 is reached.
