Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Jubilant, John reports that the "Pilar" by 9am has limited on halibut and ling and are currently working on controlling the king population.
Bad phone connection prevented any further details, but the fact that there was a connection at all tells me they must have been at the Rockpile.
Bait Boy and Mr. Fisherman are onboard today.

Oh, one more thing I forgot to mention...
Johnboy says the conditions are nice today... I think he said flat, but I can't be sure.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
I think Pilar's Mate should buy John one of these so we can get pictures of the fish in real time. That would be way cool. Maybe Santa will bring me one.<g>

Now that's a scary thought! How would I keep him from dropping the phone AND the laptop in the drink?

Not a laptop, a handheld to make more portable. I was more worried about tuna goodies in the keyboard. Now that's a scary thought.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
'Nother update:
noon: the "Pilar" is heading back to shore - that ol' W is begining to rear its ugly head.
Halibut advice: Fish for kings (flashers, rotary salmon killers - same ol' salmon gear - same ol' drift or troll) at 100' in 180' of water and slam the 'buts. Same thing that happened to us back on the 4th. The 'buts are not on the bottom.
Unfortunately, the salmon apparently went on vacation somewhere else, 'cuz they sure weren't at home.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Update - today 1:30pm - the "Pilar" limited on Halibut and lings again. Salmon still on vacation. "Pilar" heads for the bay. "Puffin" headed west toward the chicken ranch with one flattie on board.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
I had an awesome time as crew on the mighty vessel Pilar. we as you have heard limited on lings and halibut both by 8:12 am we had our lings first with a 20Lber done by 7:15 and our butts 15 cranks off the bottom except for the biggest one, by 8:15. most of our butts were caught on salmon gear and mooching lead. so a few things learned last year were put to the test and success is what we have to show for it.... we did lose a few fish due to leaders parting but when the drags are set properly and the lighter rods were used the fish really had no choice other than to come up.
we then proceeded to try for kings and got blanked...
while fishing for salmon at 100ft on the rigger with an RSK and a flasher, Pilar got the biggest of our Halibut the pic's are sure to follow;.)
It was good to be on a fish catching boat and Call fellow IFISHers in on the hot bite. saw Moby and Princess on the water and helped them get into Butts, talked to seasquid on the radia and also talked to Wak'm who sounded quite depressed as he was on shore because of not going to take a look at the water early.
as in all things take weather forecasts with a grain of salt and never hesitate to go take a look at the ocean for yourself. after noon it started to get a bit sloppy so we fished in the bay for bait for day 2.
Thanks to Cap'n Dan who fished hard on thursday for bait and provided us with our very good fortune. Princess also like your bait as they got into some very nice fish after using the fresh vs. the frozen.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Much tougher fishing on Saturday but a successful trip on the Pilar just the same. We came back in with our limits of Flatties and Lings. Saturday started out quite lumpy but flattened out throghout the day. By late afternoon it was a nice ocean. What I'm wondering about now is why, when, and where these flatties suspend and do they do it on a regular basis. I'd much rather catch ye old flat ones at 90' with a 6oz lead then at 500 with 4lbs.
Anyway was a great trip, and oh by the way PM I've got everything but the wireless modem to make then realtime picture thing happen.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Using the always unflappable Pilar coordinates, the Gottago headed to the northern end of the rockpile on Friday with two ocean newbies on board. Four flatties were brought to the top but all measured 31 7/8 inches so they each lived another day. We did get three nice lings in the boat. Also, we returned to the bay for 24 keeper crabs on one pull of five traps that soaked for eight hours. There were many softshells that were tossed back but it was amazing to see each box stuffed to the ceiling with large males. Of the five traps, I swear I only saw ten females in there with the boys.
Saturday, I returned to the pile with one friend on board. We brought up a 30" ling and a 45" hali. The bite was slow all day.
After removing the hook from the hali and prepping him for bleeding out the back of the boat, I found myself hugging the gunnel with my head over the side of the boat. I kept my cinnamon roll down but sure came close to chumming. Sheeesh, that looking down will get ya every time.
I hear talk of another halibut season. I sure didn't hear of much success on Saturday from fisherman on the dock. Sure, Pilar and his crew limited but we have learned to expect nothing less out of that blue and white boat. Keep up the good work boys!
Heard Seqsuid and Wakm on the radio and saw Puffin a couple of times. Even tooted the horn at the Julie Rose III tied up in the marina and planned on sharing a beer with him but couldn't find the time to walk over there. Man, what a vessel!
There's always next weekend.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Oh one more thing about the Realtime pictures. I know a guy who can build watertight cases for the computer devices and then we'de just need to get a high speed link and we're in. Trying to send pictures over a halfast connection would be a real challenge.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Pilar,
Could you see the suspended Halibut on your sonar? Also, do you retie your RSK's with a heavier mono and or different hook, or do you just run them out of the package?
We found halibut on the bottom on Friday finally, but had poor luck on Saturday. For 2 boats Friday, we found 8 butts, the biggest was 55", 5 were 50+, 1 was mid 40's, and the other 2 were upper 30's. Saturday produced only a single 40" for the other boat, and nothing for my boat or crew except for a possible keeper lost at the boat.

Hey Southpaw... Email me and tell me what kind of wireless modem you'd need... What's your other equipment. I'll see if I have something laying around

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Orca, I saw suspended fish at 100 to 120 feet all day. By the blip size (large) I'm guessing they were halibut. We were in 180 to 200 feet of water.
The RSKs I get are in a bulk pak with no leaders. We used a new rig with (2) 8/0 Gamakatsu circle hooks snelled onto 60# maxima about a foot apart. Put one RSK between the hooks as a bait clip for the bottom hook and one for the top hook. Spin is unimportant. The RSKs are for holding the fresh herring on the rig. Clip the nose of the bait and thread the hook around the backbone near the dorsal fin. Position the hook so that the point is sticking straight up behind the dorsal.
This rig works great if you can let the fish eat and swim. We kept getting dine and dash bites on normal salmon leaders and break offs on 30# mono vs. teeth.
Fresh Yaquina herring is the preffered bait.

PM I'll email you soon. Won't see y'all this week end though. I've got a date with several Steelhead on the Deschutes with a dry fly.
I know I know there not tuna, but there's just something about that truck tire size silver flash right before your rod tries to leave your hand that just gets my heart pumping a smidge.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Southpaw,
What high speed wireless modem are you referring to? At 9.6k the Globalstar phone is as good as it gets for a connect from anywhere link. AFAIK
If you are in cell phone range the speed is what 14.4 or 19.2?
Until, ATT deploys 3G networks on the coast and then we will be blazing. Wireless Ham TNCs send at like 1200 baud tops. What else is there?

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Sounds like fun and definitely a first, go for it! Several waterproof bags will be required to protect the goodies before and after use. When 3G networks and devices are available (later this year or early next) then you will be able to send streaming video. Then Pilar can give us tuna catching instructions live from tuna town.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Avid,
Mabee I should restate from "High Speed" to just "wireless" communication. we're using a moden that an AT&T cell phone plugs into at work for order transfers. I'm not how fast they are but I can get reception at the chicken ranch with my phone. I thaught it would be kinda kewl to send a low rez pic that way.

Re: Halingnookbacore update from Pilar
Whoa,
way cool, new way to keep the ifishers updated about the current catch from the boat. Check this out, it's not available in US yet but phones like these are selling like hotcakes in Japan and Europe. They are sure to be here soon. No need for the PDA, modem or computer.
