Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
After looking at the charts it looks like the warm stuff is much closer to tillamook than depoe. Does that necessarily mean the tuna will be easier to find out of tillamook? Trying to plan my first chase and don't want to go farther offshore than I have to but will do whatever is required

Salmonator
If you went fishing today, I think Tillamook would be a better choice. The newest pics from coastwatch show 61 degree water about 18 to 20 miles straight out of Garibaldi and you would have to go about 40 for the same water out of Depoe. With the current weather pattern the warmer stuff should be coming in even closer and it will help that the inshore waters seem to be cooling off. The bigger the temp constrast the better IMO. I have done well tuna fishing out of Garibaldi, but my boat is in Depoe.............so I will be heading out of Depoe Monday if anyone else wants to get in the hunt. IF the Garibaldi water gets really warmer, I may think of trailering up. The last time out anything purple and black was the ticket.
Good luck if you go Sunday and if you do post some gps #'s so others can target the same area without having to search around.

Salmonator.....today temps out of Derpoe look alot better...I think...Marty what do you think.
Looks to me like we could be in the right place at 30 miles.
We are still planning tomorrow...at 5:30 am Depoe.
Is anyone else in?

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
Wak'm
The newest Terrafin (3:00 am today), shows the nicest temp break almost straight off of Newport heading straight out past Nelson Island. Thats the strongest showing of temp contrast and you would have to run to the 125 line as it reads now. Although I think it will move in closer 4 to 8 miles with this southern push. Everything will shift northward and get warmer in the next couple of days. Before you guys head out you might check the coastwatch site for an update. I will check things again this evening and throw my 2 cents back at ya. Wish I had my act together and I would go with you. I'm still planning on a Monday and maybe Tuesday.

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
Thanks Marty, I wish you were going tomorrow. I welcome your 2 cents anytime,
So what do you think of the stuff building in on both sides of the 45 line (about 35 miles out)? It is stronger today than yesterday.

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
Ughhhh, sorry guys. I got nearly no sleep last night and there's no way I will get out tomorrow. Thanks for all the replies and I AM on a mission to get out soon. Today we hit the pile and picked up one halibut and three lings. Called it quits before noon, towed my bro in from the pile, dead starter. With the obvious exception of the other ifish salty-dogs, we saw very few fish hooked today... Joe
BTW: we also picked up our three traps just around the corner of the south jetty and picked up 10 nice crab. Only one was soft, the rest were very firm.

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
wak'm
The new terrafin came out (3:00 pm) and I would head straight toward the 125/50, which is south of the 125/45 line. If you head that direction you should run into a pretty good temp break and then just do your thing. I won't be able to sleep tonight thinking that I should be cruisin into that zone of tuna birds buzzing around the current lines 30 miles out as the sun is breaking through the overcast......and you make the decision to put em out and you only get two rods out when the first one is jammed into the rod holder as someone is yelling 'hook up'...........and then the other rods gets hit and you see some boils off near the floating debri and you have that excited inner smile thats telling you how lucky you are and that at 7:00 in the morning church is just starting. I'll be with you in spirit.
Wak em!!

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
Hey Marty, I wouldn't get too excited about the Garibaldi water. I blew a ton of gas Friday and Saturday trying to find those bullets! :depressed:
Yeah the water is warm but it's green all the way out past the 55 mile mark.
Water was rough on Friday but we managed to get out about 35 miles after Hali fishing. Saturday the water was a little better and we went out 48 miles. We hooked up with another boat that was out about 35 miles and they continued on out to 55 miles and still never found blue water. In talking with one of the commercial guys, he said he fished last Monday for Tuna and found them at 55 miles.
Just wanted to let you know so you don't have to waste a bunch of gas like me!

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
Corrirod
Sorry to hear you went the distance for a no show, hopefully wak 'm and stak'm will have something more positive to report. The last three times I went out, I did not find any blue water either. All three times I have gone out this year the temp would very gradually get warmer to about 20 miles. Then it would be (example) 58.8 or 59.6 for plus or minus another 20 miles and would then start to warm up. Just a couple of tenth of a degree on the outside edge of that 'frog' water will usually be holding fish. Our first trip out we caught 23 fish in a small area that ranged from 59 to 59.4 and we never did see blue water. The inside edge of that 'frog' water will sometimes hold fish also and these will be the green water hogs that are 10 to 15 lbs bigger than the schoolies you get outside. I had plans of going out Monday, but I couldn't finish my order................so it will be Tuesday for sure. I still think we will head out of Depoe and burn some gas.

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
Well we are back...what a long ride...
We left about daylight and we were about 32 miles out when we saw some porpises, it was 56.5 temp.....We picked up about 4 fish in the next 10 miles , but it only got to 57.6.
So we kept going out and north....at 52 miles we turned back in, we want to make it back with a cup of fuel left. We picked up a few more here and there,,,,and ended up with 10.
They were a good size and all taken in that off colored water.
It was nice weather on the beach but out there it got pretty bouncie.
Good luck tomorrow...
Back at the dock, everybody had there chinooks.....nice big fish also.

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
Wak'm
What direction or area did you target??? Wow... 52 miles!!!! I would think you would see jumpers in that amount of water covered. You said it was bouncie outside........what were the conditions and how bouncie?? Also, the chinook you saw...........was that at Depoe or Newport??? Last question........what kind of boat do you have, as it sure looks sweet from the pic's I saw. Let me know next time you are thinking of heading out and I will try and join you.

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
We ran out on a fairly straight line to tuna town, and from there we went about 10 miles northwest.
We never saw any fish until they bit. and it was lumpy for awhile, I would say 7 ft sometimes, we couldn't get up and run in it, and when we were in the trough we couldn't see over the waves. I think it had to do with the current in that area and the nw lump and the south wind. It was getting better in the afternoon,
The chinooks were in Depoe, (nice onces) your friend ( I forgot his name dang it)..(lives in Dallas, fished the chicken ranch yesterday) nice guy......well anyway he had some hogs.
They were 6 miles out.
I thought about going tomorrow, but I have to can tuna again.
My boat is a 22ft seaswirl striper...I just wish it had more than a 60 gallon tank.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Other than the lack of fuel capacity, what do you think of your Striper? What year is it and what motor are you running? Do you trailer it and if so, any idea what the combined boat and trailer weight might be? TIA

Re: Tuna sunday... Garibaldi or Depoe?
It is not new by any means, it is a 94', but it had only 140 hours on it and was garaged.
It has a V6 200 hp Chevy.
Th ride is pretty comfortable, but I still kinda liked the wind in my face,
I do trailer it, after having several boat ate up in the salt, I would rather just haul it back and forth. I am not sure of the wait......I think it is around 5000#
