best sushi pdx?
Awhile back there was a thread about favorite sushi places in Portland/surrounding areas. Must have been over a year ago. Any suggestions (again!) for best sushi in portland area?

Saburos in the sellwood area. It was my #1 vote the last time this thread came around and it still is. The only drawback is that you will have to stand in line for a hour to get in. My recommendation is to get there at 5:30 when they open.

Saburo's is tough to beat, but I'm a college student (STILL!) and need more bang for my buck. San Sai in the Pearl District (although I HATE the pearl!) is really good and a GREAT deal. Check it out!

Re: best sushi pdx?
Depends on if you define best sushi as the most plates you can eat for the least amount of money, or the best quality of sushi. for quantity Sushi Takahasi is good on wednesday nights and all day sunday $1 a plate, they are also pretty good other days as well. Todai is another high quantity place but you better be able to eat more than $25 worth of sushi. Benihanna's has a $25 all you can eat deal in the sushi bar monday - thursday from 5:00-9:00. For quality, dragonfish, portland city grill, and the sushi place at the airport (PDX) believe it or not are some of the better ones. Cant remember the website but search for Oregon sushi reviews or something like that and there is a site that has a guy that visited most of them and rated them.
I am a quantity guy though when it comes to sushi so its usually pretty easy to rack up a $30 bill at lunch after eating 15 plates or so!

Re: best sushi pdx?
If you want big portions and a decent price then Saburo's is probably your best bet. I'm not a huge fan however and I only live a few blocks away. If you want top quality sushi the best place I've found is Masu East, on SE 28th between Burnside and Stark. Brian, Brandon and Kenny are amazing. Masu is a little spendy but with sushi I really think you get what you pay for.

Saburo's is the one I couldn't remember the name of. We've been to Todai many times and were thinking of trying a new place. Thanks for the replies!

Re: best sushi pdx?
I like City Grill. Sushi at the place is WAY under-rated and you can eat in a very fancy spot for not too much $$.
Sushi Takihashi out near David Douglas school is good and a cool atmosphere.
According to my Japanese friends, the best place hands down is Syun in Hillsboro. Never been but they don't go anywhere else. It is supposed to be incredible.

Syun in Hillsboro is my favorite, but when on a budget SanSai on NW 21st will do (they have 1/2 off happy hour all day everyday on much of their sushi).

Re: best sushi pdx?
Maki in downtown Tigard is the best I have had in Oregon so far. However I will add the caveat that I haven't tried some of the places the other guys brought up.
For good quality Sushi on a lunch budget Mio sushi in the "Beaverton Round" has also been better than average for me.

Benya 8166 SW Hall N side of Street behind the 7-11.
West of Progress
You can't see it from Hall.
Mostly Japanese patrons. Very small place.
Wonderful food, nice people.

HAMAS Sushi, 42nd and Sandy, next to the Trader Joes. Small, close, you can sit at the sushi bar and watch them slice and dice. Doug

Dragonfish downtown. There is another one on Broadway and around 19th that is good too, can't remember the name.
Consider yourself lucky up in Portland. I have TWO choices in Corvallis. And neither is open on Sunday.

Well, we ended up going to Hakatamon's in Beaverton. Great sashimi and sushi rolls. We ate lunch there both Sat. and Sun. and filled ourselves on $12-14/person. Definitely will go back! The patrons were mostly Japanese which is always a good sign. Plus right next door is a huge Asian store called Uwajimaya with everything you could want for Asian cooking from fresh fish and frozen sashimi grade fish to veggies, noodles, knives, plates, rice cookers, etc. Wow! Yum!!

Unfortunately I have to agree with that. After spending time in San Diego and enjoying some of those incredible sushi places, I haven’t found a high end quality place in PDX which compares to a high end restaurant down there.

Last good sushi I had in Tokyo so most places leave a bad taste in my mouth, seriously.
Everyone raves about Saburos, but I thought it was just okay, not worth the wait.
I could care less about price or quantity when eating sushi.
I like Syun Isakaya in Hilboro. Closest thing to a Japanese pub.
Downtown, Murata was always good, but I have not been there in 5-6 years.
There is a new place in the pearl that is supposed to be good, but I have not tried it yet.
