Fishing report for July 26,27,28
Single handed the boat on Friday for tuna. Ocean
was ROUGH with winds blowing at 25-30 on the outside.
I was only able to get 5 lines in the water, two poles
and 3 hand lines. My troll poles stayed firmly in
the upright position. With nobody there to help me
I figured I didn't want to take the chance of falling
in the water to put the poles out! By the time I was
out 17 miles I had slowed down from 25 knots to just
9 knots so I thought to myself "myself, I'm only running
at tuna speed! Might as well get a couple of lines
in the water!" Before I got my second fishing pole
out and set I had a hit ... and a miss!
Fished for a few minutes more and had another hook-
up. Landed that fish and before I could get my gear
back out I had another one on! Thought for sure I
was in 'em!! I fished the same three mile radius of
water for the next several hours and ended up with
14 tuna, all between 17.5 miles and 20.5 miles out
of Depoe Bay! At 2:00 pm I had had enough of the
pounding and went home.
On Saturday I took a couple of the "dock rats" out
with me. Went to the same spot as Friday. Wind was
only blowing about 20, but the swell had picked up
to about 12 foot! Big white water on top of the swell
and I was having trouble getting the gear to work right.
I had two hookups within the first 20 minutes and
we landed one. We ended up fishing out to 25 miles
getting kicked all the way. That was enough. Turned
the boat toward port and fished back in to 16 miles
without any more hookups that I could detect. Pulled
the gear and went home! BTW, the water temp in the
area I had fished on Friday had dropped almost two
degrees overnight!!!
On Sunday the weather report was for more of the same,
and after two days of getting my tail kicked out there
I decided to sleep in. Of course, the ocean was a
*lot* better on Sunday! ;( At least inshore it looked
really nice. Kinda wished I'd have tried again on
Sunday, but listening to the commercial boats it
sounded like the warm water had moved out and they
were fishing out at 50+ miles offshore.
I'll be down Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday this
weekend trying for tuna if the weather is good. If
it turns out as bad as last weekend, I'll stay inshore
and fish for ling cod and Chinook off the Siletz reef.
Good luck to everybody this week!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">Exactly right ... no room for error. Fishing under
those conditions can be trying at best!! I was very
tired after a couple of days of it and slept a LOT
on Sunday!!
As for having success, I guess it's all relative!
I was hoping for a lot more fish for the weekend!!
Oh well, I'm sure I'll have better days as the
season progresses (I hope)!
Sea ya,

Re: Fishing report for July 26,27,28
Sold that batch so I didn't have to clean them!
Somebody elses job! Actually, the guy I sell 'em
too is reselling them into the Asian markets in
Portland and Seattle/Tacoma (sp) areas.
... And, yeah, the Maxweld held up real good out
there ... it was this old man that wasn't holding
up so well. Two days of fishing, one day of sleeping!!

Is it legal to sell sport caught fish in Oregon?

Re: Fishing report for July 26,27,28
Yes and No ... It depends on if you are licensed
for it or not. For $20 you can buy a permit from
the ODFW that will allow you to sell TUNA only and
then only to a licensed buyer (usually there is
a buyer somewhere around the docks). It helps pay
expenses and allows you to be able to fish more!!
