OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
We crashed. Ifish has been ripping all day with activity. VERY BUSY. We crashed. UBB classic cannot handle ifish anymore. I was hoping it was a RAM issue, but I think all that did was allow you to post faster, thus putting even more of a push on the old Perl program. We need MySQL!
I've been dragging my feet long enough!
It's onto Threads, like it or not.
I'm ordering it, now.
Jen

Threads is a different, more reliable software for larger boards.

Any chance we can get a spell checker while we're at it?

I am excited about this!
Threads are easier, picture uploads are easier, you can track actual post views easier.
This is going to be Great!

I think I have enough to worry about right now. It's springer season, and it's going to take much work to redo this board. :depressed: I'm a little bummed. Of course, no time is a good time... BUT SPRINGER SEASON!?!?!?! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Willow Drifter, and those like you, if you are interested:
It would be VERY helpful if you are available to answer questions, while we go through the change. No one likes change, whether in the long run, it's better, or not. If we had certain people's e mail available as "Threads helpers" that would be awesome!
In fact, I might be writing to you, soon!

It might not be as pretty as now, but it will be functional for those who catch on, quickly!
I am hiring someone to make it look as close to classic ifish as possible. It can be done! Yet, so many cool new features! It will all be alright! Even better!

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
Jennie, I am more computer savvy than the average ifisher and am willing to help if necessary. I spend an awful lot of time in front of a computer anyways. (Full time student and fulltime work= lots of computer time and next to no fishing)
I am not sure if I've seen threads before though. If it is purely SQL driven, then it won't be as fun to code. I guess that it would have to be based on SQL though (answering my own question). It really is one of the better languages for this large of data storage. anyways I'm thinking out loud. Check your PMs, I want you to check out another BB that uses a VBB code and has many more members and threads than us. It has had its issues but still run pretty strong. I do know that they had a hard time finding enough bandwidth.

Furthering my last post, the board that I was talking about uses VBB and has nearly 30K members. It has gotten a lot larger since I last visited. I am a four digit member.

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
I am waiting to find out how I'll do this.
I think I'll just put it on a credit card, and proceed with the April Donation Fund raiser to cover it. It's 100 for a license, and 250 minimum for the transfer. I think it will be more, because of the size of ifish, and the archives.
Then, I have to hire the design guy to make it like the old ifish, and then I put all the banners and headers and footers back on the appropriate forums, assign the mods, configure...
Sigh... I can do this. I really can. When I think about the work time involved, sometimes I wonder, but it always seems to be alright!!!
Sometimes it seems like a good idea just to start fresh! But, we'd lose all those archives. One of the things I'm really looking forward to is the speed and efficiency of the search feature, on Threads. It's awesome! And, the pic upload! Oh yeah, got to pay for that, too, I think! I think that is an add on.
I do think there is a spell check hack. I'll look it up.
Jen

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
Good thing you are moving to threads with MySQL. Your problem was CPU cycles, the file I/O used to read/write to disk created your problems. MySQL can handle many more concurrent read/writes then the old method of storage. I would however recommend you have one server for MySQL, and one for serving the application. This will allow you to handle even more traffic.
I find it a waste when people just throw uneducated guesses at what the real problems are. The old saying throw more money at it, and the problems will go away. When a more efficient solution exists.
I am just giving my two cents. Keep in mind Bulletin Boards lack gestures.
I would be happy to offer *FREE* advice on future expansion, and troubleshooting.

Oh yeah, another server. YEAH RIGHT!
The free advice I'd love, though! I'll tell you one thing very clearly, however. My tech is NOT uneducated. He is very, very good at what he does.

I just got the pic upload thing figured and NOW you're going to change. But, if it's easier to upload pics with threads then I'll look forward to figuring that out too. I'm all for whatever makes it easier on you Jennie. You do plenty enough of the hard stuff around here. Bummer it's gotta happen when the springers are starting to show up.

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
Now, now, I am not picking on your tech. I am just simply reading what you have to say, and interpreting it. As I hope your tech would agree more minds you can throw at a problem the better off you are.
Please don't take my comments as hostilities toward your tech guy, nor yourself. I am simply stating the facts as I see them. Neither am I trying to discount anyones education on a matter.
This statement from you led me to beleive guessing was going on. "I was hoping it was a RAM issue". Many people would agree that statement is a guess, rather then logical monitoring that would give you definitive answers.
I tried to say this with as much love as I could, but the Internet lacks emotion.

Now I have to buy a case of printer paper to prevent the destruction of the largest collection of "how to" in the world.
Hey! We'll get to ask the same questions over now! Yippee!

Jen, You have a wonderful resource here and I know I log on atleast four to five times a day. I enjoy it. Your service is the best site on the web for what you do and for the info that we are looking for. You are the boss so when the time comes to put a price tag on acccess don't hesitate. Most us us will be there and wont bat an eye.

I have to realize that some people will get frustrated during the move/integration and leave. That's just the way it is. But, hopefully, in the long run, things will be better!
I am preparing myself for lots of whining! And, I am looking myself for someone to whine to. Anyone want that job?

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
Jen,
Send the whiners to me, I'm used to it! I deal with them all day long anyway.
Like Fishfaced says... Don't be shy about stating the pricetag for the upgrades to make this site even better (although it's hard to envision it getting better).
We're behind you all the way in making the improvements for a more efficient ifish site. I wish I could offer some tech help, but alas...
Feel free to whine when the need arises. Change will be difficult for many but that's their issue to deal with, not yours.
Have fun regardless!

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
For those of you that want a spell checker.
If you are using IE as your browser, there is a free spell checker for IE. It will allow you to spell check all of your posts before you submit. I know it helps me when I choose to use it.
It's called IE spell and it can be downloaded at http://www.iespell.com/download.php
It puts the standard abc/check mark spell check icon in your tool bar and also an ieSpell option under tools.
Hope everyone is able to find this helpful, I'm going to also start a post in LIG.

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
Jennie,
Best of luck on your transition process... I wouldn't worry about the few people you loose during the transition process... it's temporary, and they will come back later... ifish has too much going on to stay away for long !!
It looks like you have a lot of free resources available for you to use.... you may use some of it, under the supervision of your tech and yourself.... it will also provide the providee another line item for their resume....
..for extra computer hardware.. what would be your minimum configuration needed to help you out?.. I have two older desktops[100Mhz FSB] that could be used as possible file servers, and would be glad to give to you for free.
...and feel free to vent your frustrations and progress on your transition process as new postings.... there are a lot of ifishers[ myself included] that have a personal interest in knowing what it takes you to provide the ifish website...
...as for the whiners, just keep looking at all the other postings that have only the best of feelings towards your efforts...
Good Luck,

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
Thought I'd give you an update on Threads. Things are coming along, although with some sweat and tears, here and there!
I have started inviting a couple users over to try it out, and help me troubleshoot.
There are still some glitches, and the control panel is such a step down from UBB Classic, that it's disappointing, but I'll get used to it. What used to be done in one step, takes three.
Some features we'll miss... Some we'll love!
Give and take, I guess!

Can't believe how fast the present board is this, morning it flies! Must have moved a lot of stuff over.
Looking forward to the new board.

Re: OK, that's it! UPGRADE TIME
Jennie, Will you be able to pinpoint the time that the board will be down, and let us know? I read every morning, and I'm afraid if I get up one morning and the board is down it my be too traumatic for me. If I know when the board will be unavailable I can check in the night before....or go fishing really early.
Thanx

Yes, I will let you know very specfically. Actually, I will let you know how many hours I THINK it will take, and then pray that it does not exceed that by too many months.

Jennie - one word of advice - make sure to runn ALL, I repeat, ALL, the updates that are applicable. We missed one and it took me quite a while to figure out why MySQL was throwing errors. Good luck! And I look forward to seeing the finished product.
