CR BUTTs Closure Premature???
I'm not gonna say it this time.
Okay, I reviewed the catch data for the CR fishery this morning. Of the 13,133 #'s we were graciously given to fish for the CR crew only caught 9192 #'s of butts. Leaving on the table 3941#'s yet to be fished for. The closure was premature at best.
I am sending off a note to the powers that be asking for an additional opener on June 14th and 15th. I would suggest that those of you that want to fish do the same. 3900#'s is plenty to have at least another weekend open off the CR. Let's hope they do the right thing and give us another opportunity.

Re: CR BUTTs Closure Premature
Don't know if it will make much difference, but the data you are looking at does not include last week up & through Sunday.

Just looking at the current catch data available. I did miss the dates posted so I may be in error. Thanks for pointing this out.
That said, doubtful the quota was reached based on tough fishing this past weekend. We came in sunday with two sub chickens and two short for a limit. We were not the only boat this happened to.

Re: CR BUTTs Closure Premature???
Please excuse my ignorance on this one but...why is the quota for the CR area so tiny when compared to the quotas for the areas to the south and to the north?
Is it because there are no fish off the CR , or is it because they don't want idiots killing themselves on the graveyard of the Pacific?
I fish out of the Willapa and can choose between WA area 1 (CR to Leadbetter Point) and area 2. I wanted to try halibut this year, but my schedule and conditions didn't line up. Hopefully they reopen it Aug. 3.

They have been proposing raising the quota for the CR for some time now, but there is one particularly loud voice in the area that keeps reinforcing the fact that there are no halibut off the CR.

Catch and Eat must have a ton of influence on the IPHC because he's the number one proponent of "no halibut off the CR" .

Re: CR BUTTs Closure Premature???
Honestly, the CR quota is only there because the CR ports finally found a decent place to fish for the darn things. It's a tough fishery, with a small place to catch 'em, and a good run off shore to get there. I'm still amazed that only 9,000# was caught in a month. That's just crazy, but it illustrates the point. When you can take x% of the population in a year, why provide quota to a fishery which doesn't use the quota? Not saying that is right, or wrong, just decent logic behind a decision that was made.

Re: CR BUTTs Closure Premature???
Oh I have zero influence on the IHC. lol.
The responce from Don Bodenmiller is not in a positive light. Says we possibly went over the quota. Not sure how that is possible but I'm not the one taking catch data.
So it appears, might not have been premature.
Bill, The ocean was snotty as you well know and the charters did not want to burn a ton of fuel so they opted to sturgeon fish instead.
