Default 2002 Salty Dog Challenge?

Anybody up for a challenge this weekend?

I think it would be cool to see who can catch the widest variety of fish in one day this weekend. With the all-depth halibut season open Friday and Saturday that should give us an opportunity to open the venue up a little.

Halibut, tuna, lings, sharks, salmon, bottom fish of all types, crabs, etc.......

This doesn't need to be an official tournament but just something to try for fun, unless Jen has a sponsor that would like to donate a prize. Perhaps you could just earn the title "Salty Dog Champ"? Or maybe we could get a trophy made that gets transferred annually to the winner?

I'm sure everyone was already planning on fishing for everything they could I just wanted to "kick it up a notch".

Any ideas? Anyone interested?

I am always interested in a friendly competition, but the problem is that whenever I target multiple species, I wind up screwing myself. I am targeting BFB first, Albacore second, and will have crab traps out. If there are any hours left in the day, and we are still having fun, back to the rockpile for lings and salmon. But in that order, no deviations.

Threemuch, I have a similar plan but if the ocean is right I'm going to do the "Albi-Hali-Nook" sequence. Unless we find a shark in between. There were a lot of them out near Tuna Town last week.

Anyway, it was just a thought. I'm reaching maximum capacity for fish storage so I'm just trying to mix it up a bit.

Wak, I was thinking of heading down to Newport with the rest of the Ifish clan. Did you have other thoughts?

I guess we could decide as it gets a little closer and we see how the weather pans out.

Sounds good to me, I just never fished Butts out of Depoe, I thought if you were going there I would change my plans.
Newport it is.................still holding my breath with this weather.....it is so foggy this morning I cant see the beach and it is only 300 ft away.....but there is NO wind right now.

Last night we never got realy bad but the drift would have sucked.

My hope is the weather reports will soon reflect the little low that is coming thru this weekend.

Hey before I forget.......what channel will you all be on.....19??? 69??? 71???? 77????

Hali nook bacore? How do you score this anyway?

I'll tell 'Puffin', he's the champ at multi species trips.

I agree with Kurt. Run to the Halibut grounds and do the bank robbery. Then since you are there, scratch around, find and grind the Hot tuna. Then......

Maybe I can jam a few Chinook or lurkers in whatever fish box is not full by then.

Muh hah ha haha ha hahah !

That's the spirit! Let's just have some fun! I'm tying up some new Tuna rigs at this very moment based on your posts Pilar. Thanks for all your efforts to help the less knowledgable.

Based on the latest SST is anyone thinking of changing to Garibaldi for close range tuna?

Also, has anyone been out to the Rockpile lately? Howz the fishing been? Are the hali's still around?

Just trying to get my gameplan together since I'll be competing with Ifish's top dogs!

Ok. Here it is!

One scrap piece of fence board....free.
One old trophy thats been collecting dust in the garage for years.....free.
One bolt to hold it all together.....$.05

Once assembled, painted, and given away as the bragging rights to being the top Salty Dog from the 2002 Salty Dog Challenge,

PRICELESS !!!

Believe me when I say it's even uglier in person!

But that's what gives it character!

Hey, for that trophy, I'm liable to drag the ol' V-Sled over and try the 40 mile run hanging on the tiller of my 200 Merc  . I wish I was a little closer and could hook up with you guys, it sounds like a BLAST, but not in my sled. Maybe some day I'll grow up and be able to afford 2 boats.......

I have never wanted something so bad in my whole life, I want it....I desire it.....I must have it......I will not sleep if it is not on my pillow beside me.

What a great idea.......perfect

As far as halibut at the pile......yup...they are still there. When we were out there about a week or so ago, some of the commercial longliners had gear scattered all over the north side.

It was the first time I have seen them lay so much gear on the south end of the north pile, right where it drops into the canyon btween the piles. That is where I am going first...my GPS is in the boat or I would have numbers....(thats where RJ and I got the 101 pounder a coouple of years back)

As far as rules go.....there are no rules. The idea is to catch the largest variety of fish and largest quantities per boat. We can all post our results on the board and take a poll from all the Ifish forum as to who should be declared the winner.

I don't want anybody to get too serious or carried away, I just thought it was a funny idea and we can get a good laugh out of the winner.

I'll keep the trophy under guarded lock & key to assure it's safe delivery to the winner!
I know you'll find it hard to believe but this is a one-off piece. No others exist. It comes with a certificate of authenticity. The serial number on the bottom is the #1.

The materials of construction are as follows:
1. Hand carved (with a jig saw) pre-treated cedar wood salmon.
2. Genuine 100% pure fake injection molded gold pewter.
3. Hand carved (with a CNC router) anodized aluminum plated plastic cylinder.
4. Beautifully flat black painted plywood base.
5. Hand painted (partially with wife's red nail polish...please don't tell) non-engraved lettering.

The craftsman spent countless hours (well, about a 1/2 hour) molding and shaping this masterpiece and has chosen to remain anonymous in order to avoid being exposed to the hordes of people who will be wanting to see more of his work. I have given him my word that I will keep his secret.

Good luck Ifishers,

Just so you know, my wife is rooting for all of you to win this thing so she doesn't have to see it in our house again!

I think it is just beautiful, and I am sure there are plenty who would love to have your wifes dream come true. Not only to hold such a master piece, but to have the bragging rights that come with it.

I think you must have another master piece...............because my EX wife would have hid my boat keys by now,
