I have used 30 pound tuff line for the last 2 years running with nothing but great results. We just did a Depoe bay trip with 2 big nooks and countless cohos without any problem. What type of a knot are you using/

I've been using 30lb tuff line with no break offs. I have had several hit and runs where as with the mono there were less problems with losing them. I changed hook size on the tuff line and increased the catch ratio. Two weeks ago I was out, and we caught 20 chinook all on tuff line used from last year. Lost several, but none from breaking the line.

I think you had to have a bad batch or the drag was to tight.

We used 50 lb Tuff Line for halibut for years in Alaska without a breaking problem. Lots of knot problems until we learned the right knots. :depressed:

That could be the only answer then. You had to have had a bad batch of it. I'm sure it happens....just why did it have to be you huh.

50lb tuff line will just about rip your arms off trying to break it loose from a snag.

I have a friend whom bought a large swpool dand it was bad. 80lb stuff breaking at 20 to 30 pounds according to their test. they took it back and got some new stuff and haven't had a problem since. Look at the knot you are tying that is very important the line will cut its self.

It's definately bad line. I had the same problem with one batch and it was a costly lesson to learn. I just kept on trying to use it and it would break off. I had another pole with it on that worked fine so I knew it had to be a defective line. I took it all off and had new stuff put on and no problem.

hope you are using the right knotts. Sounds like knot failure. Which knot are you using?

I've had the same 30 lb Tuf on my reels for several years. The only way I can break the stuff is to cut it. It can get nicked up though. It may have been a bad batch, but check your primary guide out of the reel for nicks or cracks.

I have three rods with spectra two with tuf, 80 and 65, and one with power pro, 50. No problems with any unless I snag up while bottom fishing. Then I can't break off, and need to tie off to a cleat to straighten hooks.

I use a palomar knot, and have no problems.

i use a palomar knot and have never had a problem.but on this day i losed:
2 rotory flashers=$20.00
3 delta divers= $25.00
3 apex lures=$15.00
4 coyote lure=$15.00
kind of an expensive lesson you think.and not one of the brakes were at the knot..so i will have to say it was a bad batch.@%5@tuff line
i think i will try power pro..i have never had a problem with it...

I tried 80 lb Tuff one year on Halibut and broke several spools off in the middle of the line. Did I have a bad batch? Probably. I contacted Tuff, and got 2 new spools, but never used them.

I now use 80 lb PowerPro for Halibut and 50 lb PP for Salmon (overkill I know, but I don't want to be sorry if I break off on a big boy).

On my Halibut rigs, I have gone to a 70 lb topShot of mono (California big game style setup) and it has performed super. I have always broken off at the knot on the swivel at the end of the mono when stuck on the bottom. I am also using Pilar's rig with the ball attached to a 30 - 40 lb snap that will part before the line if only the ball is hung. This saves a lot of halibut gear, and I haven't been left with 1/2 of a spool after breaking Tuff in the middle of the line.
