Generally speaking, not with a wired connection. Most consumer grade home networking products are 10/100 or 10/100/1000.

No matter how fast your router is you are still limited by your ISP. Even at 10MB your router is still 3x (or more) as fast as your Internet connection. A really good cable modem connection is about 3Mb.

Most of the speed/range boosting marketing is for wireless.

There are different performance seen in routers on how fast they route/connect with the ISP, for the most part everything on the market is good enough. And you probably don't want to pay for that type of switch. you will jump from 50$ to 1000$ plus if you think you want the optimum connection. There is also smart switches you can go to.. that is your connection is prioritized.. and the others have to negotiate in.

but the reality of it is , you don't need it,, a linksys wrt54 is good enough. What they offer in the way of speed improvements are internal.. such as the wrt line,, they have B, G, and GS. B is standard 2.4G,, G is frequency hopping (merging many B types into the communication) and S is a speed optimization of linksys's. However, that is all the wireless stuff and you want 10/100 for your internal use.. 1000 or 1G probably is going to be more than required by far.

Now if you are doing a media server,, and want to serve up video from your office to their room then 1G would be usefull behind your router.

Excellent answers I'd say. I finally got a wireless router and immediately asked myself why in the world I didn't do it sooner.

Don't forget the tinfoil hat, to keep hackers from downloading your thoughts via WiFi.

Good point JustCallMeDave!

Might I also suggest putting your router higher than the PC and let gravity work for you Improves your 'download' speed.

Oh geez, good point. The other caveat that I have to offer is that folks with children in their household who currently have braces shouldn't use WiFi, as there have been reports of the kids receiving streaming audio into their mouth that way.
