ford ranger transfer case and front drivershaft

I took out my transfer case and front drive shaft today and I found something that I have a question about. Should the shaft that goes into the transfer case have oil on it? Mine is bone dry and even some rust dust came out. I havent checked to see if there is any lube in the case yet.
