Default Any Tuna Charter recommendations ?

Salty Dogs,

I know most of you have boats etc. and chase Albacore on your own, but for those with no offshore boat what charter or guide service catches fish and what should one expect to pay for the service? Anybody come to mind ?

Thanks,
Get Bit

I think the Irish out of Newport is probably your best bet, they are the only ones I know of that do Rod and Reel on a big boat. Most big boats in Oregon do handline only.

For a six pac, try Rich Oba on Pacific Pioneer Charters out of Winchester Bay.

I think a partyboat trip for albacore will run you $150-200 depending on the vessel and how far they have to run for fish.

Better hurry. I understand the Irish is for sale and will be making it's last journey under Captain Ken in Mid-August.

The cost on the Irish this year for a standard 12 hour trip is $175. The Irish is a six pac boat, meaning 6 fisherman. As for rod/reel vs hand line. I'd take hand lines any day. The reason is, I want tuna, not one or two, or half dozen. With the rod/reel, the boats stops to allow the angler to land the fish. When you have in-experienced fisher people, that takes to long when you finally find the tuna. You won't get doubles or tripples shutting off the motor to land 1 fish. With hand lines, the boat is always moving giving more tuna an oppurtunity to grab the jig. You'll know what I mean if you try the rod/reel after trolling for an hour with nothing and finally find some fish then have to stop. Plus, hand lining is fun, it's still work.

Oh well, try them both and see for yourself. I can always use a rod/reel for salmon.

There are other tuna charters that'll cost $150, maximum anglers is 12 on the bigger boats, which is to many people. Of course, you could book the entire boat and have all the fun.

best of luck,

Gregg

I missed a trip Fri. with the Northwester out of Garibaldi's D&D. They had one for Mon. but not enough people (7) signed up. They charge $175 and use hand lines. They also limit your fish to around six. People they took out last year didnot want all the fish and left them. The charter is reponsible for it so now they discourage more than six tuna. Saw their boat come back everyone on it was happy about the crew and boat. The fish were 35 mi out and were 15 to 20 lbs also saying they were not schooled. They are trying to get another trip going out the 29th.

The other charters were doing salmon and rock fish, weren't going out for tuna, and seeming a little flaky about information.

Charters that I checked on in Westport Wa were 2 day trips getting unlimited fish, that is right no limit on tuna in Wa, costing $400.
