Wak, we're going tonight in hopes that it looks good tomorrow. It looks like Depoe Bay.

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
Wak', you are an animal! You just put 40 in the boat yesterday and you're already at it again!
Right on! You da man!
Isn't the weather supposed to turn tomorrow? I'd like to go but I think the wife is grounding me for a couple of days. If the ocean calms down again during the week next week I'll be up for it again.
Have a safe trip if you go out tomorrow!

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
Yes Corrirod, it is supposed to turn... it will be awful. We won't get out, we'll be frustrated and probably end up fishing herring in Newport.
(shhh... just go with it, okay...)

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
Well Ok look at this
http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/statio...?station=46050
I think it will be ok. Long 9 to 10 second swells and it is 1.5 and 5 right now. The whaa whhh, air moving around stuff is 2! out of the NW.
Is this the calm before the ... knock on wood.
Let's go! We can always bail if it is too gnarly in the morning. See you at the Depoe Bay parking lot.

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
Tagster,
You're looking at the right one and it is discouraging although the wind probably won't kick up until the afternoon (I'm praying.)
I'm heading out for Newport shortly and hope to get out in the morning for salmon and get back in the bay by 1:00.
Sunday looks like a real no-go.

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
I am hopeful.....they called for some wind today and we have had none...and just a lazy 5ft swell all day.
I looked at the off shore bouys and not much swell being cooked up out there.
right now there is just enough wind to break the gloss.
I will be there at 5 unless things change.....
I am wondering since the pile warmed to 62....would that mean the tuners might be closer?

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
OH NO......I woke this morning to a cold NW'er in my face.
I hope something worked out for the brave souls that went.
I wouldn't have guessed that we wouldn't have had a little break before the wind came up.
Did anyone go????

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
It looks like there's some 62 degree water not far from what I think is reedsport on the map. It sure looks like it's close. What's the bar like down there? That's not that far of a drive from the mid valley...

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
I am going out of Winchester Bay after tuna this Thursday with Captain Rich, Pacific Pioneer charters. I'll let you know how far out we go. I agree the SST looks promising.

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
No tuna here. We woke to the wind shaking the truck at Depoe Bay. A trip to the bridge over the channel showed a pretty stiff NW wind and a roiled, wrinkly ocean.
So we went to Yaquina Bay and got a few herring. Also went out and tried a little Salmon trolling. Nastee!
Oh well, now I've got 10 doz. hering for other days.
Tuna again soon.

Re: Tuna Saturday?????
Tuna was a bust on Saturday. Nasty wind driven ocean.
I managed to get down to Depoe Bay on Friday evening early enough to throw a jig with a glow and green split tail on it. I was fishing the little cove just north of the bay, off of the point. It was about a 30 foot drop down to the water.
After about 5 casts, my jig got slammed hard by a 28 inch Ling cod. It put up a good fight, but landing it presented me with a interesting challange. I remembered talking with Puffin about fishing this spot, and he had said to grab the line and start pulling, and that the fish would just come straight up, as long as I kept his head out of the water. It worked just like Big Jon said.
I cleaned the ling that night at the dock, as the fish cleaning station was closed. When we got up on Saturday, and found the ocean not fishable, I went to the cleaning station and fileted it out. The meat was just about the same color as the glow jig that I used to catch it with, a nice almost fluorescent green.
Though we had no tuna for dinner that night, the Ling sure ate well off of the BBQ.
I just thought I would share this with you all.
Any time you are going to the Ocean, take a pole and some jigs. You just never know what might be close by in the water.
Peace, Tom
