Had a cruddy opener at Neah Bay, but let myself get talked into trying for butts in PA on Saturday. Tides weren't bad and the wind was pretty calm all day. I had two virgies and a buddy from PA with me. My PA buddy fishes pretty often and agreed to bring HIS gps unit. We got out to 270' and had two lines in for the first drift. Nada. We moved a little further out and made a second drift with 3 lines. Just about the end of the drift, buddy 2 lands a 21# on herring, and tags his first halibut. Not a monster, but he was quite happy.
On drift 3, my clicker starts a wonderful slow hummm. Up comes a 42# that sucked down my hot pink big gulp (had a herring above that). Further along that drift, my rod starts to bounce, but no clicker hummmm. Buddy 1 grabs the rod (I figured it was a shark or rockfish and already had my fish anyway) to land a 12#. This one took the herring over the big gulp. By 930, we had 3 fished tagged and the bite turn dead, the wind laid flat too. We fished til 1400 with only a couple sharks and 1 quillback to show for it. I wanted to continue to try to limit out, especially with only about 1-2 hours to the tide change, but we had a long drive back home and 3 fish wasn't too shabby. The ride in was about as good as it could be. Talked to the fish checker and she had 33 boats with 17 fish. There were about 8 more trailers left over.
I forgot how much meat was on these things
