Default Tuna how many lines?

Hi
All this tuna talk has got me very interested I recently bought a new boat so I am
interested in giving it a try, after I get the boat range figured out. The boat is a 20'
Koffler Bay-Bee With a 115 hp merc. EFI 4 stroke. I seem to be getting close to 3.5
to 4 miles per gallon, and with a 40 gal tank, tuna look like they are in range.
MY Question-- I don't see anything in the regulations regarding how many lines
you can fish for tuna with, the OR sport regs say 1 line, where do I find the other
info?

Thanks Mark

The only regs I know of is that the limit is 25 per fisher per day. The tuna are found outside of Oregon State waters, but Don Bodenmiller at ODFW is awesome with information. Might want to check with him if you're concerned. Don.Bodenmiller@hmsc.orst.edu

Most of the guys run at least a couple of handlines and as many stand-up rods as possible.

There are no regs on how many lines because it's not a state regulated fish. That's how people get away with using handlines and rods at the same time. This is also why the limit is 25 a person. The more lines out there the better. However, there's a fine line between a good spread and massive entanglement when fish are hooked. I personally run four rods and then three handlines underneath the rods.

How can the Oregon State Police have jurisdiction over waters "Outside" of Oregon State waters?

Thanks, Rich

Interesting.

I always wondered about this one. Even though we are outside of Oregon waters when fishing for salmon out there, we can't run more than one rod. I wondered why it was okay for tuna.

Bummer. That will make limits a bit harder, eh?

This one got my interest too so I read the WHOLE DANG reg book (well almost). It does not say anything in the book about the end of the States limit (like 3 or 12 miles). It does however say that if you land in an Oregon Port you are subject to Oregon Rules (or some such mumbo jumbo). I think that the OSP is right and that's where they get ya.

What you do with the information is your choice. But I should probably impart to you that the message I received on this topic came unsolicited. Someone saw our thread and forwarded it to Don who in turn emailed me because he knew I was an ifish member. I'd have to say that was darned nice of him!

I would think that when you cross back into state waters you would be subject to the limit if you were no longer fishing. How could they have jurisdiction over how you caught those fish out of state waters?

The way I see it is it is like gambling on cruse ships. The state has no jurisdiction beyond 3 miles. They can't limit your gear as long as you are over 3 miles out, no mater what they say. They can restrict your take because you are transporting it across state water.

If a fish is landed in Oregon, the Oregon laws apply. How would they know how you're fishing in federal waters? I don't know. How do they enforce illegal fishing methods for commercials?
Do you know who is fishing next to you? Do you know who is reading this board? Do you know if the plane flying over is OSP?

Think about your posts guys and gals. Fishers use this board for information... who else does?

Just a thought.

I still think (might be wrong) that they don't have jurisdiction.

Well since I started this post I felt I needed to get more info. I spent the last 3 hours looking for info. What I found: Oregon territorial waters extend for 3 miles off shore except in some areas where there are exposed rock reefs (port Orford) where the limit may extend to 7 miles.
from 3 miles to 200 miles is the exclusive economic zone -- Federal regulations.
The feds say that there is no limit on albacore tuna, but when you land you are subject to state laws on possession. A permit is required to fish for all Atlantic tuna species
even though there is no catch limit for albacore.
Salmon regs set by the Northwest Regional office of NOAA/National Marine Fisheries Service specifcally state that from the USA/Canadian border south that you may only use one (1) rod/reel to angle for salmon. They give no limits whatsoever on means or number of lines to angle for tuna.
I think the OSP is wrong, They have no jurisdiction in the Exclusive Economic Zone only onb the quantity of fish brought back to an Oregon port after fishing in Federal waters.
If someone would please have the ODFW or OSP show us (federal or state regs) where we are limited by quanity of lines I would like to read the info.
By the way California doesn't seem to have any restrictions on qty of lines when angling in the ocean even state territorial waters (except for certain zone restrictions)

PM, I'm not implying that a person should use multiple lines because they can get away with it. I do know of a few cases where law enforcement was wrong about jurisdiction and interpretation especially with fish and game laws.

I just received an email from Don Bodenmiller. He indicates that the rule is one line/rod per angler REGARDLESS whether you are in Oregon State waters or beyond. Don says he received this information from OSP.

Sorry guys!
