CR Ocean Chinook....
Anyone going to fish this fishery this year? Opened today. It's been years since we had this fishery. Last time I fished it, I used Coho tactics and we had limits in a hurry. Fished in shallow water though, 60-120 feet.
Lookn' forward to giving it a try tomorrow; before or after Sturgeon.
Anyone else?

Re: CR Ocean Chinook....
Care to trade some of your CR Salmon Season for Central Coast Halibut Quota?
Good luck to those who give it a shot.

Andycoho, we went today and hammered them. 3 nice chinook in a little over and hour. I posted an update.

Re: CR Ocean Chinook....
I was sitting on the beach today looking at the South Jetty and thinking, "I wish there were some salmon to fish for." I didn't know about this chinook opening.
1 or 2 fish limit? barbless hooks? Any tricky regs to be aware of? How long is the season open?

We went straight west which takes you a little north of bouy 1. Was pretty bumpy so we headed SW and found 300 feet of water center channel. Trolled south trying to stay in 270 to 300 feet of water. Had a tip from a commercial friend of mine. It paid off .

We are going Fri, Sat, Sun if the weather is good. I would guess you were using typical gear for CR fishing, diver-chovies/herring rig. Maybe a flasher for good measure. I'm glad to hear of some fish. Where there many others out?

Re: CR Ocean Chinook....
We sat down south west of the CR bouy after getting our 4 butts today, nailed 3 fish in the first half hour 8-12lb,then trolled way too long looking for our forth before calling it a day.Unfortunately the forth fish we were looking for was mine, and we never found it,nice day to be out there though.

Not this coming weekend but possibly the weekend after that. May run south for bottom fish though.

Where are you thinking for bottom fish? I heard the south jetty was producing some reasonable fish.

Re: CR Ocean Chinook....
Here's a link to the ODFW site showing the map of the control zone.
http://www.dfw.state.or.us/MRP/docs/...on_seasons.pdf
We want to go this weekend but the swell & wind forcast looks a little rough.
Went to the Hill from Garibaldi Saturday and picked up 4 chickens and threw back 2 skates and a ling, good day!
Would like to know the general area off the CR for butts so we can kill two kinds of fish with one trip.
Good luck!

This control zone is meant for separating salmon regulated zones (Ocean vs. River). You won't get hasseled for fishing the south jetty for bottom fish.

I'm not sure if your talking about going out of Garibaldi for CR halibut or not but you cannot do that legally. Also, for now the spring quota for the CR is gone. They will announce on June 5th weather there will be more spring dates or not.
ODFW
CLOSED effective 11:59 pm on Sunday, June 1. Any further openings will be announced after the catch is evaluated on June 5.

Re: CR Ocean Chinook....
I looked further and didn't realize the CR was already done for Hali's, maybe if they open it back up on the 13th-14th we might get a chance for two species.
When do they expect to close the lower CR for Sturgeon? I could always add those to the list.
Right....

Re: CR Ocean Chinook....
Andy,
Last time we had this fishery I headed out in my jet boat to an area that Gene from Tackletime suggested. We went North and fished in 65 to 80 feet of water. Trolling just a little slower than you would for Coho with divers at 18 pulls and hit limits the three times we fished it. The fish were 18 to 24 pounds and just full of fight.

You guys were brave. Nasty bar from 7 to 11:30.
It was a nice day to cut the lawn and fix the deck at the cabin. Oh and take a nap too.

I agree. that is why we crossed at 0530. good visability. no breakers on the bar. the ocean was great. wind was occasionaly light, but mostly calm. it was a bit lonely though. saw one charter coming out early, but didn't see where they went. saw one other sport boat coming back in. otherwise it was just the commercials. came back over the bar at 1230, again no breaks, just gentle swells.

watch the weather. looks like next Sunday may be like yesterday - except the tide exchange is much smaller and the ebbs will be early and late. I will look at crossing after the morning ebb and returning before the afternoon ebb, if it is as calm as it is currently predicted.

one of my quickest opt outs. now Sunday is looking like ocean conditions will exceed what I like for CR salmon fishing. Unless it improves from current predictions I won't be out there next Sunday.
