Well... Spring seasons are finally over and we hunted it til the very end. Here's the recap on the bear hunts and last minute turkey success
I have been chasing bear off and on with plenty of bears being seen but zero shot opportunities.
We started yesterday afternoon hoping to catch up with a bear that I had filmed on the coast a couple weeks ago.
I filmed this bear at 800 yards. Just a wee bit out of my comfortable range by about 400 yards. I didn't have enough light to sneak in closer for a shot, so reluctantly I backed out.
Headed back a few days later and spotted this bear.
Not as big but I was only 300 yards and getting ready to shoot when another hunter spooked the bear. We had two cameras going this night, one behind me and one on a landing that was watching the bear. Game over...
Headed back last night to give it one more shot in this clearcut. I saw a great bear!
Unfortunately he wasn't even on my mountain.
Sat til dark and nothing showed in my area and we hiked out in the dark. Decided to hit it one last time in the morning and see what develops. We covered some ground and glassed various clearcuts until I spotted this little black dot at 800 yards.
I knew he was smaller, but it was the last day
He split before I could get into range. My friend had to head out of town and I wasnt about to roam around his hunting areas without him so my spring bear season came to an end.
BUT... I still had a valid turkey tag and so did my friend Jeremy. So at 11am we made a couple calls and hammered out a spot in Roseburg to try and hunt for a couple hours.
We gathered our gear and was hunting at 1pm. Things got hot really fast. Within minutes I had two hens battling me and coming into within 10 yards.
We moved along and covered some ground until I got a tom to respond. Every call he hammered back. We closed the distance and made a set up. I had another hen battling me and pulled her to within 10 yards bring the toms behind.
I know what your thinking... no face mask, no gloves - yep and I was wearing my bear hunting pants too
I figured it was the last day and things happend so fast all we could do was sit down. We tucked into our hats pulled the guns to our cheeks to stay hidden. The hen moved off to the left and we lost track of the toms for a few minutes, but when they gobbled we shifted our guns to the left and hammered two nice toms at 2pm on the dot. As we stood up, there were toms everywhere! I had been battling this hen for twenty minutes non-stop and apparently it pulled toms from every direction to the top of this knob.
This area was remote and had not been hunted all year - lucky for us, it was text book turkey hunting. Call, locate, set up & punch tags.
Yes, I did shoot him in full strut and added some air conditioning to his fan.
Jeremy hammered a nice two year old tom with a 7 inch beard. I shot a longbeard and was surprised when I went to pick him up what I saw.
This tom weighed roughly 19 pounds with a 10 1/2 inch beard and NO spurs. I have seen mature toms with long spurs and no beards before, but never the other way around. Either way, it was a great way to finish off the season.
