Default Mo on handlines

Now that you have the stop length set, tie the other snubber knot on the boat end this time. Push the 7' end through the boat end of the snubber. Pull the line until the mark you made is about 4 inches past the hole in the snubber.

Snubber knot, boat end, 1st step

Form the line as shown and start the knot by making the first coil. Use the 7' end to make the coils.

Snubber knot, boat end, 2nd step

Make 5 or 6 coils in the direction shown. Notice the black mark on the line. In this instance the spot was too close to the snubber and the length was wrong when I tightened the knot. It takes practice, but you can do it! Actually you have no alternative because you cannot buy this gear anywhere.

Snubber knot, boat end, 3rd step

Pull the knot tight. Again avoid overtightening as this will cut the snubber.

Snubber knot, boat end, last step

Now for the ends. The snubber ends up near the boat and that end of the line gets a surgeons loop. The loop must be long enough to go through the bottom of a cleat and around both points. To do anything else is to give your custom handline to the first huge fish that pulls hard enough.

Make the loop big. Use about 20" of line and fold over as shown.

Surgeons loop, 1st step

Then take the doubled line and make a simple overhand knot. Work the knot so that most of the loop is out of the knot, making the loop as long as possible.

Surgeons loop, 2nd step

Then make a second pass with a simple overhand knot.

Surgeons loop, 3rd step

Tighten the knot, working the loop for maximum length. Trim and burn the end.

Surgeons loop, last step

Ok, last step. That first silver bullet is probably long gone or ignored and warm.

Tie the spiral swivel on the jig end of the handline as follows.

Push the jig end of the handline through the swivel.

Swivel knot, 1st step

Now form the line as shown below.

Swivel knot, 2nd step

Make 5 or 6 coils.

Swivel knot, 3rd step

Pull the knot tight, trim the end and burn it. Now all you need is an empty line spool to wind up your new handline.

Swivel knot, 4th step
