Default 2008 Green Peter Report Thread

Ok, let's get one started here instead of having them all spread out.

5/31

Fished from 6:00am untill 2:00pm, landed 8 kokanee, 2 @ 15", very nice fattys and 4 12" rainbows for my buddy Del, and one chinook, he wants to try one! We had to wade through a dozen chinookies to get theses! Had to launch at whiticoomb, because there were 20 bass boats at thistle this morning! Orange and pink were the colors for today and right down the middle of the lake @ 28'! Saw some schools forming up, but I would bet my bottom dollar there nooks!

good to hear you got out and into the open.

We launched at 6:30 at Witcomb and the chop was already a factor for the drift boat. We fiddled around all day in the arm in the hopes a seeing a break in the wind. Never happend that we could see. We took out at 5 and never got a koke bite and only managed two trout. Pitiful results.

Anyone know if theres a way to tell if the wind is going to be nuts up there before actually driving to the lake? I almost always see the wind pick up at 11am or so and die off around 4. Sure would be good to see a website or such giving a clue to wind forecast.

15"ers, nice!! Sounds like nice healthy fish. Biggest of the season I have heard about (figuring the odd Wickiup 16 to be skinny this year). Pink and orange... jigs, WRs, top secret crappie tubes, apex?

Apex, I couldn't hook a wool sweater with an apex! Top secret crappie tubes, some with blades and some with out! The hot pink w/glitter was killer, but the chinooks loved it even better

I lost more fish trolling than I have ever. I could not get a coke on board. The wind was up when we started fishing at about 10am at 1pm gave up on trolling.

We started playing with worms caught (18) 12-28 inch rainbows(we kept ten) The dogs got tired so we gave up about 5pm.

Fished GP today....7-2; kinda slow; 2 bows; 3 kokes; and one nice chinook. Fish scattered. Interesting thing about the chinook hooked down by the dam is that it was 21" long and fat! Opened it to find a 5" koke in it...I think some good things are coming here. Wonder if one should try trolling some red label in there for big chinook????

We also picked up a fattie on Saturday. About 22" I am wondering if anyone is catching any that are bigger. I'm not sure there is the potential if they don't go to the ocean? New to ifish and if is fun to see how everyone is doing.

Would you mind sharing a description of what an apex spoon is...I purchased an Apex luhr that looked like a flatfish..green in tone..think they called it a kokanee killer. Or, is it something else I canpick up at Joe's///

Been catching my kokes on green wedding rings and corn..the old standby...trouble getting thru those darn small chinooks sometimes...did manage a 21" nook however...that was fun. Just trolling back and forth by the boom??don't need all your secrets...thanx

June 7th

Started off the day with the lake all to myself for about an hour it was kind of boring so I watched some Lab TV

Then when that got old, I got into some good old animal abuse

Don't feel sorry for him, he's a dougnut stealin son of a gun

It turned out to be a nice day!

Well the fishing wasn't to bad, landed 14 kokanee, kept 5, they were all nice, I got plenty in the freezer, and a Paulina trip is coming up! Probably 10 or 12 Rainbows, and a handful of nookies! The fish were crazy today, I would say that well over half, released off the clip today, even the rainbows! And once the fight was on, they went really nuts! It was a hoot! Got two nice koke's out of the deal! The two on the left are 15 1/2" and 16" Both records for me

Just the two fattys, Wait untill July, August, they will be

arrived about 6:30....wind blowing abnoxiously from the East. Trolled to the dam before finding any concentration of fish. Trolled circles in front of the dam and averaged 4 kokes and 1 rainbow each circle. When wind change to obnoxiously from the West the bite stopped and we found it again in the center of the lake. Fish were very shallow caught from 12 to 25 ft. Crappie nibblets outfished corn (again). Fill the hook, dont use just one. Wedding ring with nickle blade. Blown off lake at 12:30 along with bunches of incompetents at the boat ramp.

Kokes: 23 (8 Kept)
Trout:12 (released)

Fished at Green Peter on Sunday on my first Kokanee Trip with Downriggers . . . got the cheap 60-70 dollar Scotty Downriggers and put them on the Drift Boat. Ended up with 3 Kokes and 2 chinooks. Caught most of the fish around the Island and the back side of the peninsula that the Whitcomb Creek Boat Ramp is on, if that makes sense. Took off at 12:00.

Yeah, Beside's trying to manuver in and out at the boat ramp, you have to deal with a boat ramp the size of a bed of a pickup!!!!!!It just make's it harder for boater's going in and out!

I am with you Pathfinder. The launching facilities at Green Peter leave much to be desired. In fact, they may as well be non-existent. Really frustrating with the increased boating and pwc pressure lately. And it is only going to get worse. Maybe the Marine Board will get a clue one of these days.

Fishing report from yesterday: not good. Very tough day, and one of my worst. Only managed 3 chinook and one kokanee. Where have all the kokanee gone? Only saw two very small schools during 7 hours on the water, and they wouldn't bite. Couldn't even make them mad enough to have a reaction strike. Sounds like things are really hit and miss. Some folks seem to pick up a few fish, but most are having less than desirable results.

Took my Dad out for Fathers Day. On the water at 7 and left at 12 before too many crazies showed up. Fishing was pretty good for about an hour or so then they did the disappearing act. Went 5 for 7 for two rods. Crazy thing is all 7 hits came on the same rod. Orange UV hoochie and dodger 45'. Tried the same setup on the other rod..nothing. Tried three other setups...nada. Weird. Fish we got were 12-14" and in great shape. Did get a few trout and little nooks also.

Pretty much ditto for me today. Got out early, had some good action early. Landed 4 out of 5 kokes, 13-14 very plump inches. Pink UV hoochie behind a sling blade, 45 ft near the island. Then it just shut off. Caught some decent trout on a rapala and finally got tired of the wind. Had been there two weeks ago, was surprised at how much higher the water level was, as well as how much debri was in the water. Really got tired of trying to keep it off the fishing and downrigger lines. Still had fun.

I was there today also. my wife and I caught 7 Chinook and 6 kokanee all about 13 to 14 inches. and about 6 rainbows. Pink UV hoochie behind a sling blade was working well for me but could not find anything that would work for my wife. Finely I gave my rod to my wife. I found another sling blade and put a pink, chartuce and orange color hoochie on and found somthe else that would catch fish. I lost a lot of fish today. They fought hard. I don't loose many most days. Just as we were ready to Quit I told my wife I wanted to see her catch one more then we would go. My wife said to me look at that fish jumping behind the boat. I told her its on your rod. Then she lost it so we came home.
It was a zoo at the boat ramp. When people get a licence for there boat they should have to take a test. Two min. to lanch a boat and five min. to got the boat out. One of the boats ahead of us took 15 min. to take the boat out and one took 10 min. to lanch because he pulled down on the ramp and was not ready. He had to put the plug in, unstrap his boat ect.

Thanks for the reports. You guys should relax at the ramps. You could waste the gas and go up to the rock ramp the skiers get in and out fast. Never had to wait that long. I enjoy watching people at the ramp never know when a good fist fight will break out. Allways over somthing stupid. They should be having fun.

If you want to wait go to newport I had to wait 2hr to launch and once boat in the water I am gone. I met a lot of nice people that day.

Ive been in line at Newport... but never stalled out like at GP. Grandpa and grandma pull into the dock and tie up, blocking the ramp. Grandpa fetches truck and cant understand why everyone in line wont let him in to back down the ramp...finally people(me) pull out of his way so he can get down the ramp. Then he puts on his waders and walks his 15 ft boat onto the trailer. Then he pulls foreward 10 feet, jockeys his boat to center it on the trailer and ties it down.... finally he is off.... but has to stop once more at the potty's for grandma who was guarding the boat while he fetched the truck. I bet the launch was longer.... thank goodness I didnt witness it.

Meanwhile.... there are 5-10 guys who done it right and dropped off the driver and got the boat the heck away from the boat launch so as to not crowd everyone launching and pulling.

Its like the one person paying in cash in that Visa commercial

Fishing is still SLOW SLOW SLOW...... dont go deep and you will catch trout

I dumped at thistle creek a few weeks back. Got there and there was an older gentleman with three teenage boys getting ready to dump. I was ready so I pulled around them and on down to the ramp. Dumped my boat and while my son took care of the boat well out of the way pulled back up to park. The old "gentleman" came uncorked because I had taken cuts in line (was no line just him and I) and when I pulled out, he still was not ready to dump his boat. I think if he had had a gun he would have shot me....

It's last second, but my wife and I will play hooky from work tomorrow (Friday) to hit Green Peter in the 21' NR Seahawk, blue trim. We are still way rookie with gear and kokes, and would love to bump into some other ifishers to say hi and get some tips on basic rigging. Still have not used the downrigger. We both had long days at work today, so plan to arrive no earlier than 10am.

I can guarantee you that I will run it by the "person" next time...I am not interested in turning a good day of fishing into a slugfest. But in saying that, the "good sportsman" understands that when he is not ready to launch, it is only polite to allow the person that is ready to go ahead and put in.

Friday report - arrived at Thistle about 11:00am to find the parking lot half full. Quick launch. In fairly short order found Cully and we had a nice chat. Wife and I tried some trolling with apex kokanee killers behind 2oz bananna weights, 40-60 pulls (2ft pulls). No hits, runs or errors. Did see 2 other boats landing kokes. Spent most of the day touring GP, and even late afternoon we watched one boat pull in a nice koke trolling.

My wife and I are expert fly fishers, but the trolling thing still baffles us.

It was nice to me you today Timothy....Thomas and your wife.

My report is near exact to Thomas's. No congestion at the ramp, in or out. Only one boat with Metalica blarring which could be heard from Newport to Bend. I'm glad that only lasted 20 minutes. Nothing against Metalica but come on. Fished at least for different set ups on 4 different rods. The only fish came on the way in right after I talked to Timothy and his wife, thanks for the luck you senf me you two. Just a trout. Got it on a green kokanee killer (sorry joemamma) and corn. 35 two foot pulls on a 30ft. jet diver. I was in 40 feet of water when the fish hit.

After loading up and heading home I thought about stopping at the dam and putting in to jig on the boom. Gate locked. Anybody know what causes the Dam guys to lock the gate? No harm to me really, I was really tired anyway. It's to bad for the bankies though. Seems they love that spot in the far corner on the other side.

Was there early Fri., on the water by 6 and left at noon. Fishing was ok with a hit every 15 min or so. Landed 10 kokes btween 11 and 15" and lost many more. Orange UV hoochie at 45' was the consistant producer. Still not marking many fish.

I went today. We caught 16 Kokanee 11 to 15 inches. 2 Chinooks and about 8 Rainbows. My wife caught all the rainbows. Started at 5:00 with a good bite. Most caught most on Pink UV hoochie and sling blade at 35 to 50 feet. An Orange green and pink hoochie was also good. It slowed down after 8:00 and another hot bite after 1:00 after we took a lunch break. A white uv hoochie was good for my wife in the afternoon. We Quit at around 5:00. Boat ramps were great today.
Good luck Larry

Wow what a day salmon slayer. Great job. We only got 6 cokes using 3oz bannana weight 50 pulls brass bear cans and red or green wedding rings.

We stopped trolling about 11 and we played with the trout. What do you call the arm with the second boat launch up past the bridge where everyone jiggs for cokes?
We went up to the end, and We found bass 3lbs and larger ran worms right to there mouths and they would not bite Neat to watch.

We did get one bass on the way out. The fish went about 2lbs.

Was nice to be on the water. The ramp went smooth no lines.

It's actually spelled Metallica. With 2 L's.
What album was it? "...And Justice For All" is a great fishing album. Every night at 10:00 there's Mandatory Metallica! Keeps me rocking all the way home.

I really could not tell you what album it was. I know the song I remember playing was Heavy...boom boom boom "THUNDER" over and over. From that, i bet you'll know what album it was. I don't know their music but I do like it.

GraphiteZen, album? Your dating yourself. Nobody but us ol' timers uses that word to describe what music is layed on

Sounded good. Right music can be played at the wrong time. That's why I bring my ipod. Works better than the turntable and Bose on the Lake.

Keep those GP reports coming all.

Thunderstruck! That's it AC/DC Just heard it again. Fine tune

Well I just got back from fishing Green Peter and I what a blast that was! I think you guys have another Koke addict to deal with at the boat ramp .
Started out at the middle ramp and trolled around for a bit. Thought I had found a school around a point but got nothing.. The wind was taking up too much of my time so I decided to pull out and go back to the damn. I had seen some boats there when I drove in so I figured they had found fish right off the ramp and maybe it wouldn't be so windy. Put in and talked to a guy in a drift boat that was rippin lips pretty good with a blue minnow jig and corn, tied up to the boom. Trolled a bit but still windy, fish were marking at about 50' right around where the depth changes from 300' to less. Tied to the boom and tried the same technique but couldn't get anything. The guy in the drift boat takes off but gives me some good tips as it's my first time out, says he had about 15 fish with him . I guess it's about 5:00 by now. Wind dies down so I decide to troll some more. Put on a wedding ring that went hook, solid pink, red bead, the ring, clear orange with white corn and a crappie nibble. Let out 20' of line, clipped in, dropped to 50 feet and hooked up immediately. First Koke, I was stoked. By now the fish were hanging out right above that hump that is off to the right, about 200 yards out from the parking area (and isn't that a heck of a ramp by the damn haha). At about 6:00 the fish rose to about 35' and by 8:00 they were at 20'. I was told yesterday the schools were packed up tight but this one was about 70 yards square. I pulled circles around it and hooked four. Let a dinky go, had one nice fish get off at the surface and took two home.

I'll tell you I am a Koke fan now... It's like a hunt! Find the school and chase it around! Fun stuff!

And BTW AC/DC and Metallica make the world go round.

That boat was atop the backdown ramp and in deep prep mode when we pulled in, and 3-4 minutes later when we were fully ready to launch. With as much tact as possible, I asked the 3 young men if they were about to launch, and the first response was a firm "we're ready to launch!". As I walked away, I could hear them quitely talking about their actual readiness, and their desire to hold to the dock while their truck was parked, at which point they politely yelled back to me to go ahead and launch. I don't understand the 1000-watt stereo-on-lake thing, but they were pretty reasonable at the ramp.

Got off the lake a couple hours ago. Not bad today, had to deal with the usual 3 hours or so of wind but managed 17 fish, 14 kokes and 3 chinook. Three of the kokanee were 15" +, with most in the 13" range and fat and feisty. Good derby material today. Most fish caught in the 40 - 45' range but marked some schools as deep as 100'. The old standby tackle wouldn't produce today so started switching out gear early. The bite was late for me today and didn' start until about noon. Best lure today was Gary Coe signature series kokanee killers behind a dodger, pick your color, they all seemed to get fish. Had to pack it in about 3 pm but the bite was still on. I think things are finally starting to pick up at Green Peter. About time, the fish seem to be late in cooperating this year. Might have something to do with the high, cold water that we have had this season. Water temps were up a little higher today at about 62.

Looking forward to the Derby next month and hope to see some ifishers and Kokanee Power members there.

Where the heck were the fish!?!? I put in at the dam and couldn't find anything... The few fish I saw were in 10-15 feet of water...

Next door neighbor just got back yesterday.
Him and his son got 14 kokes.
They got most of theirs by the dam right out by the bouys in about 40'-55' of water.
They used Buzz Bombs with a little 2in. tag off it, then added a little egg hook with a piece of worm. Said another old fellow there killied em on that.

Show of hands: How many use a spinner string like Ford Fenders or whatever when trolling?

You friend was fishing yesterday? He must have taken them all home.. There was a another person there today trolling and he couldn't get anything either.

I caught some nice trout though and saw some HUGE what I figure were Mackinaw by the damn. One was in 150' of water and the other in about 90'. I'm telling you those fish were big....

I hate heavy spinners so I use flashlites when possible. But, sometimes a sling blade or dodger works wonders when nothing else will.

No Lie, we fished 3 hours with no fish, and out of desperation I hooked 2 ford fenders and a smaller set of flashers and then flashlites....so I had 4 total sets of flashers on the line and then a koke killer. That was the ticket...... started nailing fish. but no fun with that much hardware.... and my buddy didnt have anything but a flashlite so I was catching alone. Gotta feed em what they want I guess.

Any good reports??? Ive been doing Astoria sturgeon and Halibut(leaving today for Halibut)

BTW.... trip to Astoria and back pulling boat was $102 in diesel. Getting 14.5 MPG. Boat gas for the day was $40..... bring a friend people, getting spensive out there.
