Next Tuna hunting trip
Anyone planning another tuna hunting trip when the ocean lays down a bit?
If so I'd really like to join the posse.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
Geez, I guess I could be talked into it. 'Puffin' is somewhat interested as well. Yeah, right like either one of us will be able to sleep for dreams of albacore and Black Striped Marlin jumping in our sleep.
This weekend is looking pretty special. The weather is minimal with 3 ft swell predicted. The wild card is the wind. When it blows much above 20kts, the big refrigerator kicks in and the upwelling cools the nearshore waters. The temp has already dropped to low 60's and high 50's.
The fish are here and we will most likely be jamming west from Depoe bay at B.C.D. on Saturday morning. Any and all capable boats are welcome to follow.
More on gear, tactics and boat preparation as the week goes by. I'm looking at a bag of jigs that need the shredded leaders replaced and the makings for a third handline for 'Pilar'. I hope to get a digital camera and do a photo essay on Tuna gear. Maybe tonight.
Stay tuna-d.
Also we must know more about Billfish size and tag requirements. My mate tells me that anything goes and the limit is 25?
I'm in trouble now..........

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
Yup. 25 is the limit on billfish. I see a swordfish in my future... maybe a marlin or two.
Pilar, are we going to use outriggers this time? I'd like to learn more about using kites. I wonder if you have to have a significant amount of that W stuff, or if trolling would be enough to keep the kite aloft. What happens when you stop or change direction? Would it get tangled in the other rigs?
Ahhh... so much to learn, so little time.
Yeah, we can use the digital camera tonight to get those pictures done, but it will require entering the computer repair vortex to get them posted.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
I actually just got back from mexico and a bit of marlin fishing and learned how they rig the outriggers and such down there. Pretty interesting. When I get time tonight I'll respond again and try to explain it. It's defintiely tricky to do it right. We didn't get tangled a single time and we were also using two stings of teasers also. By all of this talk about billfish I'm assuming someone had some visuals of them this last weekend?? I've been in Mehico swirling brews for the last week and out of touch.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
TC, yes a sighting of a jumping black striper about 30 miles due west of Depoe Bay on 7/7/02 by yours truly. It was in a school of Tuna and would not hit our jigs.
I have spent some time with 'Puffin' and 'Pilar's Mate' at Powells and purchased a copy of "Saltwater Gamefishing". I think you could target these fish and maybe even hook up if you used the right gear. In Florida we use live bait or dead small Tuna and drag them so they skip along in the wake. They also use outriggers and of course a fighting chair.
I don't have the boat for that so it would be a balls out standup battle if we got into a striped marlin. We might be able to make some outriggers and I'm working on it right now.
You can also use the various 'Jet' lures. These are larger versions of the Tuna feathers. The more effective jigs are 'pushers' (flat head makes a huge wake) and jets which have holes drilled to make a bubble trail.
There is no info on Bluewater fishing in Oregon or damn little anyway.
Well then it's about time 'Pilar' took on the role of her namesake. That is pioneering blue water fishing in sport boats in Oregon this time instead of Cuba and Key West like 70 + years ago.
Care to join in the hunt?

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
I guarantee I'll be in the hunt, probably out of here in Coos Bay but I'll be in pursuit of the torpedo's this weekend if the weather cooperates. If the fish are considerably closer there I may take you up on the fleet and tow the boat, but it's a long ride from here. My dad actually just purchased two outriggers and might have to spend some time rigging them this week if the water is sporting some big fish with long bills. I wonder if shad would be a possible bait for that kind of trolling??? The bait we used in Mexico for marlin was roughly the size of a small shad. If you could pick up some mackeral on the way out that would be perfect. The alure of the ultimate saltwater fish has my ears perked up that's for sure.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
I finished rigging up some tuna feathers last night and will try to get some hand lines tied before the weekend.
Now you guys are talking about Marlin for crying out loud! For love of God, howz a guy supposed to get any sleep around here!
I can hear the conversation with my wife already, "Honey, I know you said we didn't have anymore freezer space for any tuna, but do you think you could find just a little more room for a 9 ft. Marlin?" Well, like the song says....I'm sure gonna miss her.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
Seasquid is in for Saturday out of Depoe Bay. I'll be in Newport Wednesday night on -- so I'll do some scouting and give you a call Pilar. I may make a run Thursday or Friday as well if the ocean looks good.
I know a boat that fished both days over the weekend out of Newport -- he said 50 miles out -- of course he was in a 50' yacht -- he only caught six Sunday, but said he saw jumpers everywhere.
The water temp is really going nuts out of Newport -- I'm a little afraid the warm water might just be outta of reach for me -- 40 mile max range one way.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
Could somebody help me out. What is the url for the Terrafin map that everyone refers too? I have some sea surface temp maps bookmarked but they're just to large in scale. After reading all these reports I couldn't wait and booked a charter trip for this Thursday. I'll post a report when I get back. If anyone ever needs some extra gas and ice money, helping deck hand and fish cleaner...... I'd like to go too.
Thanks,
Gregg

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
Seasquid-
Save some of that fuel for trolling! Doesn't do much good to be out there if you can't troll em up! I am in the same boat rangewise. If I make 1.5mpg I am lucky, but in good weather I can do it. 125 gallons of fuel means 40 miles out, about 4-5 hours of trolling and 40 miles back in without a bunch of extra.
Good news is, that in 7 years of albacore fishing, I have only had to go further than 40 once. Of course that was the only time I have ever broke down.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
Threemuch -- I figured 4 or 5 hours of trolling as well in my max range. I have only once went that far as well -- actually overshot them and found them 10 miles closer in....live and learn.
I saw a post where someone booked a charter -- I didn't realize they were fishing them yet. Hmmm....

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
We (Rj and I) are ready... the wind started up today and layed back down...no white caps now. Yesterday we had dark water on the beach and today it is pretty clear.
We are shooting for thursday....and maybe wednesday, but cant leave till 7 (work stinks).
Today we jigged 20+ dozen herring, (nice ones), and the fish checker said yesterday there were tuna caught at 24 miles.

That would be me. I am scheduled to go with Captain Rich of Pacific Pioneer Charters sometime between 7/25-29 depending on conditions and customers.

Hookset, here's the sea surface temp link I use.

Good to hear from you friend, don't be a stranger. The forecast is looking good. 4' swell pretty much all week. The trend is for no change. I'd prefer improving but this is pretty dang good.
Find some wide mouth pint canning jars, sharpen your knives and swab out the smoker.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
Hookset,
The terrafin web site is just terrafin.com. It is a pay per view site for the most up to date sst pics, but has free pics that may be a day or two old. Still very useful as a guide showing where the warm water is and if it is moving and what direction etc. Coast watch is the other site that I look at, and I think it may be the site that terrafin gets its pics from also. They take two pictures a day, everyday. It is a free site, but they want you to register. Their location is:
http://cwatch.ucsd.edu This will get you to the data access. The user name is IMAGES and the password is TYPHOON. Its the same name and password for everyone. If that doesn't work then try:
http://cwatch.ucsd.edu/cgi-bin/user/vcatalog.cgi
Find em and Grind em

Pilar, I have fished several times in Cabo for the Mighty Marin. The locals there drag large plugs at a very fast troll until they see the fins.
Then they stop and cast a live bait to try and entice the beast. Good luck.

Re: Next Tuna hunting trip
I am planning to run out Wednesday morning from Depoe if anyone else wants to get in the hunt. Seems as though there is a little dip in the swell and wind that day. The warmer water has moved offshore a bit, but Terrafin shows some great temp breaks about 30 miles out heading toward the 125/45 lines that will be holding some sushi. I am going down Tuesday evening, check things out and spend the night on the boat. Plan on leaving about 5:00 am.
I have used outriggers quite a bit in San Diego and they can be very effective at times. I put a pair on my boat this year and will tell you how it works when I get back. After reading about Pilars stripped marlin, I will bring a few marlin jigs too!!
