Hi all.. Just moved to St. Helens and am very interested in checking out the walleye fishing. Anybody out there targeting them and willing to talk by post or email?
Thanks

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
Now that's something I've seen very little discussion about. I too have yearned to learn to catch Walleye. I'm thinking an Ifish Walleye clinic is in order (after springers, of course  )

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
Brut-
Ive caught 6 lb wally's in the channel.
We drag worms with walleye jigs available at FMO.
Green worked best for me with a whole worm.
Plan on loosing a bunch of gear and bring lots of crawlers. When the water warms up they get moving and hungry.
Warm weather fishing is good

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
Walleye are also on my agenda! I joined the Western Washington Walleye Club at the show and will be going to my first meeting wednesday night. THe expanded fishing oportunity interests me as well as how good they are to eat. Oh, and then theres the prospect of many smallies thrown in the mix.....

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
Have boat, willing to take anyone that can show me how to catch a Walleye in the Channel....
I would even trade a Walleye trip for a Springer trip....
Any takers???

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
They are in the MC you guys, but I would not eat the resident Walleye in the channel, my own opinion.
Now the Columbia is a different story and I will trade you Salmon meat all day for Walleye meat.
Just never took the time to chase them in the lower river, but should.
FNF is the upper river and McNary Walleye expert.

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
Good to know they're out there.
I've spent a lot of time targeting walleye in the midwest, and would be willing to try my usual routines with an adventurous soul.
Generally we're talking jigging, bottom walking, and sometimes targeting larger fish with crankbaits. Targets include current breaks, gravel bars, humps, inside turns, breaklines etc.
But, I repeat, these are Eastern tactics, and I don't know how the fish behave here. Is it the same deal in the Columbia?
Also, I hear lots about big fish in eastern Oregon. How does the lower Columbia compare?

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
Having fished them as well in the midwest, I believe the same techniques would work here. I've fished them on the Missouri in North Dakota, can't be much different here except the added bonus of catching the occassional steelhead.

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
Andy....I've caught quite a few walleye in the channel. I would love to show you how to catch walleye. I 've done the best in the Columbia, but I've caught them in the channel as well. Remember, my boat burned up in the fire..so we would have to go in your boat. The best part about walleye fishing is when you put them in the pan. If you like white fish...you will really like walleye. When I get my boat back.....I really want to fish for some " eyes". That will have to wait until after springer season...Fishrite

You dont nessicarily(sp) have to wait until Springers are over. Ive had two friends get descent eyes trolling hering. Best tasting mistake they ever made.

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
I'm more than willing to share my knowledge about walleye fishing. I' ve targeted for them for over ten years in the channel and Columbia. All interested ifishers can join me at a designated place for a mini clinic after springer season. Most of the action doesn't start until the water gets much warmer. With all the snow pack this year it probably won't begin until late June.

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
I also have the need to fish some wallie. I have heard some really good things about fishing for them in the gorge out of the John Day area. Might have to make a trip down there this spring.

Re: Multnomah Channel Walleye
I think I saw an article in this months Fishing and Hunting magazine for Washington. I just glanced at it at the store the other night. I could be wrong though.

All of the ways that you mentioned will work well in the channel .I have been trolling for springers in the channel using a large flatfish wrapped with a sardine and caught Walleyes .I normally fish up at OREGON CITY for springers. I may have to start fishing in the channel to have a shot at both species . The Oregon Bass and Panfish Club has at least one fish in at the channel every year. arty .
I was surprised at the interest in Walley fishing . You may find as much interest or more if you were to make a post over at the BASS AND PANFIH column.
