Required reading?
I am interested to hear about any good books about the ocean, fishing, history, lore etc. I've read Robinson Crusoe, Moby Dick, Lost at Sea, and I know there are other books out there that are interesting or entertaining or, heaven forbid, educational, but I would like some recommendations. Thanks,

Re: Required reading?
"Blues" by John Hersey. More than any other book, this one made me understand why I love to fish.
"Song for the Blue Ocean" by Carl Safina. This is a hard-hitting nonfiction work about marine conservation and fisheries mismanagement, with an emphasis on salmon and bluefin tuna. It will break your heart, and might make you mad enough to get involved politically
"The River Why" and "My Life as Told By Water", both by James David Duncan.

Re: Required reading?
Especially, but not only for our female salty dogs:
The Hungry Ocean: A Swordboat Captain's Journey
by Linda Greenlaw
This is written by the female captain that is mentioned in the perfect storm. It's a great story about swordfishing in the North Atlantic.
Saltwater Gamefishing, Offshore and Onshore
by Peter Goadby.
Lots of good stuff in here but it's spendy at $45. The pictures alone are probably worth the price of admission. Throw it on the coffee table for display after reading.

Re: Required reading?
The Voyage by Sterling Hayden. A surprisingly good read, especially since it was written by an actor. Might be hard to get now. I've never forgotten the section about "40 South to 40 South." Vivid.
This is pretty good. I've seen a lot of books mentioned that I've read over the years, and a few new ones that I've *got* to read.

I have to say I'm a little surprised at the amount of responses from this post! I think it is great to hear from all you with reading recommendations, and if I come across any others I will post about them. Thank you very much for all your input!

Re: Required reading?
DUH! I can't believe I forgot this one:
What Fish See: Understanding optics and color shifts for designing lures and flies.
By Colin Kageyama, O.D. published by Frank Amato.
Very difficult to read because of detailed explanations about fish optics, color theory and editing strangeness. IMHO well worth the effort. A must read and then discuss with fishing buddies.

Re: Required reading?
Short stories ...
'Finca Vigia', the short stories of Ernest Hemingway. The villa where Papa lived in Havana, Cuba is called Finca Vigia. The Cubans have the 'Pilar' stored there as a sort of shrine to the writer and his life in Cuba. This book includes over 50 of Ernests' best short stories, magazine excerpts and a few stories never before published anywhere else.
Try "The short happy life of Francis MacComber", "Cat in the rain", "Black ass at the crossroads", "Soldiers Home" and "The snows of Killimanjaro".

Re: Required reading?
"The River Why" by Duncan is a must read set on an unnamed Oregon coastal river. His book, "The Brothers K' is one of my all time favorites but not fishing related.
"Ship of Gold" is another fantastic read: A true adventure tale of the wreck of a steamship full of gold and gold seekers returning from San Francisco right after the '49 gold rush and the modern day genuis who found the wreck and developed the equipment and technique to recover the gold from deep water.
I agree, Pilar, just about anything by Papa is worth reading.
