Al-Ba-Core for president!
Do you like the sweet smoky flavor of fresh smoked albacore? Man I sure do! Can your vessel go 150 miles on the open ocean and carry 500 lbs of dead fish and some burly fishers? Mine can.
So if the ocean is flat and the tuna are there for the catching, what are you doing reading this post?
What I am saying is go buy a red and white Tuna flag for the radio mast at Fisherman's and get ready for reel screaming action. Don't let anyone tell you that they are too far offshore for you to get to them.
You will need,
1) Fuel for 200 miles.
2) Ice, lots of ice.
3) A quench tank, with a sturdy lid, ask my mate about ice cold showers of bloody salt water and wagging tuna tales.
4) Some buddies in another boat to beat on while you catch fish and they try to figure it out.
5) A place to put dead tuna.
6) Handlines and jigs.
7) A boat slave to cark the fish and clean up the mess.
A word about jigs. Puffin would not leave me alone about what color, etc. I'm starting to think it did not matter. Every rig we set out was different and they all got hit. I think the 'noise' your boat makes and the speed matters more than jig color. We trim nose high and make a big foamy wake. That seems to work pretty good.
I figure about a bag of ice per fish. Use block ice for the quench tank, it lasts alot longer.
Let me explain 'quenching'. The fish comes out of the water at about 90 degrees internal temperature. You must remove the heat as soon as possible or they cook from the inside out. Fill a large tote (40 to 55 gallons) with a bucket of seawater, 3 or 4 blocks of ice and a bag or two and toss in a tuna. When they get to the boat cut the gills and bleed them out. Then into the tank for about 15 minutes.
Use the lid because they will wake up and begin thrashing around as they die. No need to call your partner boat on the radio after hauling a set onto the boat. Just wait till the fish in the tank start the tail tattoo and key the mike over the tank.
So, Depoe Bay, next weekend? Anyone?
