Default Crab bait experiment

So Monday I was in Newport and had a few hours to spare, a rod and small crab trap, and a couple planter rainbow trout. Fished for about 1.5hrs, pulling up every 10 min. or so. We were in a spot where we consistently catch Red Rock in abundance, about 5 or 6 to each Dungoness. Each trip before Shad or what ever rock fish carcass was lying in the trash can at the cleaning station was the bait of choice. However, this time with trout I pulled up a dozen under size Dungoness and NO Red Rocks! Has anyone else tried trout as your bait? What results did you get? I'll be trying this again next time I'm over there to see if this was just a fluke, but I'm thinking not. Any thoughts?

Default Re: Crab bait experiment

have found that trout and steelhead carcs do not as a whole make good crab bait. would have to say it is do to thier overall lower oil content.
