First saltwater trip on the Oregon Coast
Well I finally got out on the water last Saturday. I went on the Norwester out of Garabaldi charters.
We fished right in front of Netarts Bay. I brought my own rods and reels along with a bunch of jigs I used down in So. Cal. The Candy bar jigs were very effective for the Bottom fish, I was out fishing the boat rigs 2 to 1 and the fish I was hooking were typically larger than what the other fishermen were bring in.
The big suprise of the trip happened at about 9:00am. One of the guys on board hooked a Chinook Salmon on the bottom. While he was reeling in the Salmon, I noticed some "fish feeding" activity on the surface so I grabbed my rig that had a Tady45 lure on it and cast it out and let it sink about half way. on my third cast, I connected with somthing subsantial  . After 5 long runs and two trips around the boat I landed a 38lb Chinook Salmon  .
Some of my buddies at work called my catch dumb blind luck, I somewhat agree, with the exception that I applied some basic fishing techniques while I was in the right place at the right time.
Now I am hooked on Oregon ocean fishing!!!!

Way to go tady!
Hoping I'll get to go out in the salt water soon, too. Your trip just makes me want to go that much more.

Re: First saltwater trip on the Oregon Coast
Way to go!!
One never knows just what might be just under the surface of big blue.
I am hoping to get out there soon, and put the hook to something big with a BAD attitude!
Kings off the top are like no other. It took a good two months for my thumb to recover from the from 25lb'r I caught while trolling with Puffin for silvers a season ago.
My drag was set light, ready for a good silver's fight, and to my delight, the big King hit with all his spite. He bagan to run, while burning my thumb, I tried not to let him spool me. After the first round, he bagan to slow down, and I thought I just might get to see him, he saw the boat, and headed back down. After two more hard runs, we managed to net him.
I will not soon forget that day, and am looking to make some more memories on big blue.
Tight lines! Peace, Tom

Re: First saltwater trip on the Oregon Coast
I, too, am from So. Cal. and brought lots of iron with me. The rockfish out of Neah Bay slurp 'em up! Got a 17lb yelloweye on a codmaster 20 last year. I've really been surprised nobody sells them or uses them up here!
Tady, when I saw your moniker I instanly thought of Tady jigs. I used to love to throw blue/chrome Tady Y9's at the albies when they were really on the chew out of San Diego in the mid 80's.
I'm hoping the albies show up close enough out of westport so I can dust off the chrome. Now if I could just find out where to get some live bait, I could show everybody what that big tank on my back deck is for!

Good on you Tady..Whatta slab..Bet when you tossed that Tady 45 out you were havin a calico bass or barrie moment but darn stuck a big chrome slab instead..We like to fish with Joe at Siggi G charters just down the street from where u went..Weather permitting he likes to go outside for the bigger grade of lings and such..We used some 16 to 20 oz jigs,,Salas PDQ and Tady 15............

Re: First saltwater trip on the Oregon Coast
Hey Hamachi..I still have some of dem blue n chrome Tadys...Guess now they use alot of the fish traps on the "Slide" and are really productive...Don't know if this is still true but Westport use to have live Chovies..The boat "Outer Limits" used em and many times just wacked em..40 to 50 fish stops weren't out of the norm..in fact I went on a deep water bottom trip and our skipper went and got some out of the bait recievers..we used as fresh dead..This was maybe 4 yrs ago.....
