Live Tuna Report
My dad just called me on the phone and it seems some commercials have hit tuna at 35 miles directly off of Port Orford. He's fishing salmon right now and overheard the conversation on the radio. So it should'nt be long for the rest of us.

Re: Live Tuna Report
Looking at the latest Terrafin post on the 25th there's a lot of warm water directly off of tillamook?? Should be some good reports coming in soon.

Re: Live Tuna Report
Word from my buddy Ray Diaz in Bandon is the commercials have hit albacore at 27 miles. It's thirdhand information, but if I can, I am going to make a trip with Ray to see if it's real this weekend.

Re: Live Tuna Report
Well alrighty then ...
I am offering to lead the charge on July 5,6,7,8,9 for tuna. 'Pilar' has done this before and we have a tendency to stay up all night fileting and canning tuna after the typical trip. We are taking a little time off and want to get bloody.
Only catch is you have to also be free for the ODFW meeting on Rockfish that Friday the 12th.
You can't fish for Tuna and then remain uninvolved with the fishing restrictions proposed for offshore. Not to mention the future of nearshore fishing of all kinds.
Any takers? I know where Tuna Town is. Do you have what it takes to follow me there?

Re: Live Tuna Report
Threemuch II won't be ready for tuna town this early, but I would be willing to crew for anyone who is ready to go. I have feathers, boat lines and two or three rod/reel combos for trolling.

Re: Live Tuna Report
I'm going to call my checklist tonight of people in the know about these things. I have a couple of buddies that are commercials and have the latest scoop on the docks. If indeed they are getting fish out of Bandon, I'll probably be headed out this weekend after them and have a report here in Coos Bay. I just love having the first torpedo on of the year in the boat.

Pilar,
Where are you planning to launch from, and how far out will you go?

Re: Live Tuna Report
Depoe Bay is usually the closest point to the fishy waters. We set a course for Tuna Town, N45 W125, and splash jigs when we get to 60 degree water or find a line between 2 colors of water.
We usually find this current break at 30 to 35 miles. Once you start trolling at 7 to 10 mph you get out the additional 10 to 15 miles in 2 hours. Almost always we are done by the time we get to Tuna Town.
So the transit is from 30 to 50 miles each way and you can troll for 3 or 4 hours before you max out your fish box on a slow day. I always count on a minimum of 150 miles travelled and plan for ice, supplies and fuel for that distance.
We will be in a wolfpack for safety and to more completely cover the water. Close in to shore (less than 100 miles) the tuna are in small pods and can be hard to find. The boats deploy 2 to 3 miles apart and troll in the same general direction. Any activity is relayed to the rest of the pack via VHF and then if warranted we converge on the slaughter.
Care to join us?

Re: Live Tuna Report
Pilar,
count me on that wolf pack -- depending on the date you're going. I sent my cell# to your email. I'll be in Newport most of July on the boat for salmon, but can easily load and zip up to Depoe Bay -- or just run up there the evening before for that matter.
I still think we're just a little early to get real serious, but you never know tell you try. I saw 60 degree water off of Depoe Bay yesterday on this site -- http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/monterey/sstmaps/sst2.gif
it seems to have disappeared.

Re: Live Tuna Report
Johnboy,
I'd love to be the bait boy on the first trips to tuna town but I had the audacity to plan a cross country trip during this same time. Depending on how long the X-country drive takes I might have some time in 2 weeks.

Re: Live Tuna Report
What is the prediction on the ocean? Is it worth taking the boat out of Astoria and dragging it down to Depoe Bay? We're still loading up on sturgeon for the summer anticpating the salmon opener July 7.

Re: Live Tuna Report
The weather is improving into the weekend. Saturday is forecast at 3 and 3 with a 15 kt wind.
The question is what is happening with the warm current. Will it get above 60 on the central coast. I'd like to see more yellow and red on the SST map. 16 centigrade is about 61 F. 16 C shows up as yellow on the map.
We will plan to go and accept maybe rockpile salmon as a plan 'B'. The search for Atlantis could be a plan 'C'.
All kidding aside, the ocean looks happy this weekend. The rockpile Salmon are definitely worth the trip.

Re: Live Tuna Report
Sounds too awsome Salties. I have commitments for the long weekend. Have a blast and post the associated slaughter in poetic-Apocalypse Now detail please. I haven't wet aline in 2 weeks and this is killing me! I might have a shot for a summer/shad/oversize at bonni though. Have fun and safe trips!
Nice post John Boy. That pic closes the deal for anyone on the fence. And as far as your speaking ability you are the man. Confident and never at a loss for words. That's a good thing for you, bad trait for others to display. Let me know if you need help outlining your thoughts pre-12th meeting.

Re: Live Tuna Report
All this talk has got me interested! I've never been out for tuna but I'd love to try, especially if the fall-back plan is nailing Nookie at the Pile. How can you go wrong with that!
I'd like to follow you out if you don't mind. Will you all be monitoring Channel 77 again?
I'm going to have to get some gear in a hurry! Oh darn.

Re: Live Tuna Report
Thank you for your kind words Kevin. We all can excel at the things we love to do. E me, Kevin or call my cell. We are working on some talking points for the meeting on the 12th and a letter for the elected officials and commision members. Any help would be appreciated.
Anyone interested in the wolfpack email me at jwells@coemfg.com. My other address is T.U. as the laptop that went with it has a severe case of road rash.
The plan is to camp - cabin - hotel or whatever we can find. Probably roll down to Gleneden Friday night or Saturday morning. If the Tuna does not happen then we will launch at Newport and go to Jon's King for some spotty tail fish and lurkers. This is a vacation for me and my mate so we will fish every day it is possible through Tuesday. Or until we drop....some vacation!
If the Tuna does happen then 'Ride of the Valkyries' will echo off of the cliffs of Depoe Bay as we roll west to the warm water with the sunrise. A Tuna day is always long .. start at daybreak and return in late afternoon. A successful day is even longer as you clean fish into the night by lantern and car headlights.
I will make the effort to photo the building of a handline. Look for the post tomorrow sometime. Maybe I can build the lines for Krystalflash and do 2 things at once.

Re: Live Tuna Report
I've got a digital camera and will post some pics tonight of some hand lines for those who need it. The weather isn't being cooperative down here for a tuna run, so salmon might be more in my picture. Wish the wind would die down.

Re: Live Tuna Report
Ok I lied, my dad ran off with my digital camera, so no pics. However, I did talk to my friends and I have definite reports of tuna 32 miles off of Coos Bay. Due to the high winds here though no private boats are getting out after them. :depressed: That would've been a good pre-wedding present for me, oh well I'll get'em when I get back from Mexico.
