Anyone crossing the CR bar on 7-04?
Typically the 4th of July week is my unofficial Columbia river/ and Ocean opener. Is any one else planning on going out the weekend after the 4th? From what I see tides will be ok for the silvers opener on sunday. Just wondering who I should keep an eye out for while on the water.
Hope to see some of you.

The wife and I will be going out the 7th, 8th ,9th and 10th. We plan on digging clams first thing each morning and then launching the boat. We will be staying at the KOA in Hammond. Look for a 24 foot Duckworth along with an Alfa Gold 5th wheel. Stop by and say hello.

T V-
I'll be staying on the other side of the river at my inlaws place in Ocean park 7-4 to 7-7. Most likely launching at the state park ramp on the Washington side. Does your Duck have ifish stickers or any distinguishing marks? I'll be in my 19' blue and white Bluewater cuddy with an ifish sticker on the windshield. Hopefully if the tides and ocean are on my side I'll get out. Otherwise I'll stugeon fish and put in at the John day ramp.

BW the Duck has an ifish sticker on each side. It has a white hard top with black canvas. Probably have a white cooler tied on the back.

Re: Anyone crossing the CR bar on 7-04?
We have been getting on everyday down here on the south coast. The swell has been bigger than I like but the fishing is so darn good that it is hard to stay home.
We have actually been catching more chinook than Coho, which is a nice change..
I am a big hoochy and shad strip fan with my hoochies in any color with green or chart.
Let us know how you do..
Have a great, safe week..

Re: Anyone crossing the CR bar on 7-04?
We are heading out the 7th for the opener. Can't wait to get at those fishies. 23' Trophy called the "Cindy Lou". I-fish sticker on the port side only. I really do need another sticker.
I will be launching from Ilwaco and staying in Ocean Park.
Tides look ok just hope the bar is good too!!!!!

Heading out for the opener and will probably wait for slack tide at noonish to cross. It sure was hot before the closing, lotsa smallish silvers and several Large kings. We watched the Coast guard boys having fun fishin on the last day.

Re: Anyone crossing the CR bar on 7-04?
SJP,What am I missing? tables show High around noon at the north jetty, We will stay out till around 6:00 and wait for low slack. And I dont have to get up at Odark thirty. By the way, how do you calculate the maximum currents aren't they about 2 hrs before highs and lows. I've always been confused on when exactly the slacks take place, starting before or after or during the peaks.

Re: Anyone crossing the CR bar on 7-04?
Kenai,
If you wait till noon to go out, you will be coming back over the bar on the ebb.
I think the best time to head out is the start of the incoming tide at 7:30 or 8 am and then coming back by noon before the ebb starts running. Maximum ebb is around 3:30 pm on Sunday.

Re: Anyone crossing the CR bar on 7-04?
I have the Tides & Currents program by Nautical Software. It has the predictions calculated for each tide station and each current station. It's a pretty slick tool for tide related angling.
I prefer the o-dark-thirty thing because of the inevitable wind that can whip up the water in the pm. If it's blowing first thing in the morning, it's a bad sign. If it's blowing after 11 am, that's normal. Normally, it's calm wind and water first thing in the morning, especially on the incoming tide.
If it gets snotty in the pm, you won't be trying to come back in against the ebb, which is the most dangerous time on the bar. It's just a tactic to reduce my chances of becoming a statistic.
I avoid the early trip from town by going down to Astoria the day before. I won't even try to go out till about 7 am, and that's not too early for me if I'm staying there. There is also a good high tide Saturday evening. I've found that tides over 6' will produce sturgeon no matter what time of day, and you can fish until nearly 10:10 pm.
