Default Halibut fishery question...

The hali I took out of the rock pile area this weekend came from 148 feet of water. If I read the regs right, until the announcement of the quota being met, I can take hali's out of up to 160 feet 7 days a week out of Newport. So what if anyting prevents me from going back next weekend (ocean conditions permitting) and trying for another?

Watch out for that!

The rule is Halibut fishing is closed outside the 30 fathom line. This is loosely defined as a line bounded by the first 30 fathoms of water. Once you pass that point it matters not what the depth is. Consult a chart and check out the fathom contour lines. The Rockpile is definitely out. At 16 miles from the beach it is 10 miles or more past the 30 fathom contour, regardless of the depth you find there.

I would not fish any deeper than 160 ft as a rule. Even though the line is at 180 feet. More than once I have been approached and even boarded by the state police after boating a halibut near the line.

Thanks John, I had a feeling there was some sub rule that would get in the way. STill, it is tempting!
