Default sst latest TUNA

Checkout the latest sst for this area It looks like there is TUNA water here already. any of you users of terrafin care to confirm?

LINK

It may not be close enough for the small boaters here but some of those with longer range might see some action

I was at the Rockpile this weekend and the Captain said the water temp was 58 degrees. I'm not a tuna expert, but that is a good sign, eh?

I was at the rockpile Sat. and recorded 59.2 on the outside..........but I did a little experiment with a hand held thermometer and lowered it 6 or 8 feet in the water and it was 54 degrees. So I think the warm water is not very deep. The commercials are doing very well on the outside at 90 miles and are coming closer everyday. When I was launching at Newport there was another boater just gearing up to head out for some tuna prospecting. He heard there were fish at the 45 mile range, out and south from the chicken ranch area. I talked to him after we came in as he was just being deposited by the coast guard to a dock. He had some engine problems and was towed in but made it out 43 miles and ran into 60 degree water, lots of porpoise, birds and a lot of bait signs.........put no sushi for his efforts. There have been no good SST pics from Terrafin or Coastwatch so I don't know what the outside really looks like, but if the current warming trend continues there really should be some tuna for the halibut opening if we poke out another 10 miles or so. Hopefully the weather will settle a bit before we start having to run 40 or 50 miles outside. It really won't be much longer, but I do know that if I make it outside for the halibut, I will be bring some jigs with me to scratch around a little.

Find em and Grind em

Someone really has a bad case of tuna fever. To go 50 miles out in search of non-existent warm water? I think he needs a trip to the shrink instead of the deep blue or maybe he likes to play with Davy Jones' toys. Dream on. The best free SST chart is:

http://psbsgi1.nesdis.noaa.gov:8080/...washngtn.c.gif

At least it goes a reasonable distance offshore. If you look at it there is no 15 degree water for miles. A lot of people get confused by the Columbia River plume. It can send some hot water down the coast for miles. Nah... tuna is a while off. Looks like this years el Nino will bring a late season shot not an early season shot. Take a look at:

http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/Monterey/sstmaps/sst1.gif

It shows the 15 degree line still way offshore. It should be close to Morro Bay if we are going to get an early shot. Plus it is still howling NorWesters in California.

Still sharpening my hooks, spooling line and tying leaders......

Guess again Sensei ....

The 1st good infrared image last year was on June 26. The 1st decent weather was July 11th. I bagged 14 that day and so did 'Puffin'. We went out 42 miles and gaffed the first torpedo at 28 miles.

The water was 58 degrees at Tuna Town............

Cowboy up!

Okay you guys,

enough already! Geez, I'm twitching right now ready to go -- it's too early for tuna fever! Or is it?

I guess it's tuna skewers for dinner tonight!

yes, they can only use what areas the actual sattelite provides for that time period and until lately the clouds have been doing their darndest to obscure the view...

The newest Terrafin sst pics show water up to 61 degrees, and the Coast Watch seems to indicate 60. And today the ocean is nice and could support a look and see trip, but the weekend is very questionable for offshore exploring. I may be a minority..........but I would bet you the farm that there are tuna out there. Not as many as there will be in a few weeks, but they are there. Next break in the weather and I will be heading out for some sushi.
