Dab,

I think you need to check around and see where the most success is. The rockpile out of Newport almost always has salmon, and at times there are good bites just off the bar.

Depoe Bay of course is great if the fish are close -- five minutes and you are fishing.

Nehalem and Tillamook Bay are also good, but remember you have to be outside the Triangle at T Bay different times of the year. Those two bars can blow up pretty easily as well, so keep that in mind.

Again, my advice is to call a couple of marinas and find out what's going on. I have been out of all four of those ports, but generally I think Newport is the best for small boats and fish, not always, but that's my advice.

good luck.

DAB,
I fished out the columbia bar in an 18ft boat last year. Like you said you will only go out on days that are good which is great. Please though if you don't know the area go with someone who does because even on the nicest day there are places you don't want to be. You also have to fish outside the columbia control zone so be aware of that too. Buoy 4 is the closest to the river you can fish w/o fishing in the river. It is a great place to fish but know when to say when and be careful. Tim
