Default Hali bait?

I'm hearing that Harry's doesn't know if they will have much bait next week-end.
Has anyone ever used Shad for Hali? If so, filets? 10" tail section? whole shad for the big'ns???????

Never caught a shad before but in alaska we used 1/2 to a whole humpy. Frozen doesn't matter much. Just lob them in two when it comes fishing time and leave the guts in. It should work. Nice and shinny. Smells good.

hey jsail, yes if your bringing fresh caught shad either fresh frozen or keep them on ice ,if you get any 1lb-1 1/2 males they work great whole otherwise i would fillet and use the 1/2 with the body parts exposed. RJ

Thanks RJ,
I went out today and came back with 22.
A few are the small males, but most are 12 to 18". I kept them in a gunny sack till I got home. I couldn't decide on weather to filet them now or on the way out to the ranch. I opted to wait, so I put them whole into some garbage bags, dunked them in water to get the air out and froze them whole.
At the least, I'll have a bunch of crab bait to share.
I hear that they are catching good size salmon off of newport.
Hoping for fair weather and flat seas!

Shad is great bait man. Freeze them whole and fillet them out on the boat. I wrap them in a safeway bag and throw them in the freezer. The last day of the opener, we brought a bunch of shad and herring. There was a definite difference in how different the bite was on the two baits. The herring was a subtle bite similar to a sturgeon, but the shad was grabbed and off to the races. We eventually went to all shad on the rods. To say the least, we limited with ease and two charters couldn't manage more than 2 fish out of 46 people using herring. They were within a mile of us also. My advise, USE SHAD!!!

Hey Wak, tell me more about rigging that Halibut setup you showed me. Would that work with a small shad?

We found some crowbar hooks at Fishermans. Big Jon and I went to Delta Park and returned 2 whopper whippers that failed at the halibut grounds. Failed the exact same way in fact. The gimbal butt tip twisted off on both rods.

After returning the rods and getting new ones  we went down the hook aisle with a gleam in our eyes. Yeah! we know you guys have something for us to buy. Well ... maybe not ... no big circle hooks, no Tuna doubles and no crowbar hooks. HHHhhhmmmmm. Hey look there's one under that bin.

Lets pull the bin out and ... ooops. Spilled all over the floor. So we sat there picking through the spilled hooks and found ten or so 10/0 and and maybe a dozen 7/0 crowbar hooks. The guy came by and wanted to know if we needed any help. Once the scope of the operation was realized he shook his head and drove on.

What a sight! John and Jon pawing through a pile of hooks spilled on the floor.

Then the guy did not even know what we had found. "We don't have hooks like that" he said. 'OK, well it came out of and from under your hook bin, what does it cost?' was my reply.... "Uh, how about 23 cents a piece" I think he was glad to send us down the road. After all what was next the worm bins?

Anyway, Wak I got the hooks and I think I understand your rig, but how the hell do you bait it up? What's the not so Pacific look like today?

Thanking you in advance......

I plan to bag all the shad I can this Thursday with Bait Boy. Hoping to get enough for crab and Halibut bait.

If I were brave I'd only take one a piece for the captain and crew and do the 1 drift thing , I think I'll take a supply for some reason......

I'll update later.

I'll be fishing out of Newport Friday and maybe Saturday. I would greatly appreciate a few shad if someone with some extra is going to fish that port. We should arrive at the ramp about 0430. Ford pickup/24ft SeaRay
Will trade fishinsticks aka..; elk pepperoni.
