I'm installing 3cm(1 1/4) Slab Granite in my new home and wondering if i need to put plywood on top of the cabinets for support or because i using the thicker granite i don't need plywood.Any thoughts?

Aslong as your boxes are leveled well and attached to the wall properly you dont have to have decking. We usually inset a piece where our seams are and in the sink box but it is not mandatory.

Yeah you dont need decking on your counter tops but in some places it could help as support as long as your cab. is level and you should be perfectly fine. I might have a contact for you. Pm me if you want the info...ill call him if you are interested.. Thanks

It really depends on the granite. If it has alot of natural fault in it or a fiberglass backing you might really consider it.

With 3cm granite you would not put a deck down other wise there would be nothing to hide the plywood edge between the granite and cabinet face. With 1.5 cm granite they fabricate a bullnose with another peice of 1.5cm to hide the decking.

You will want to lay down a nice big bead of silicone along all of the contact points for the granite. Think of it as a nice big gooey bed for the granite to sink into. This will help even out any low spots ect.

STONE COUNTERTOP OVERHANG

From the Design Manual produced by Marble Institute of America.
Residential Stone Counter Top Installation
- 2.17 Spans & Overhangs
- 2.18 Stone counter tops under 1-1/8" thick should not span more than 2'-0" between support centers. Spans should always be minimized. 3/4" counter tops should be installed on underlayment.
- 2.19 Unsupported overhangs shall not exceed 6" on 3/4" counter tops or 10" for 1-1/4" counter tops. In an overhang condition, the supported area must be firmly secured and properly anchored to insure the unsupported area, when loaded, will not cause failure of the setting material. Mechanical anchors and gluing are recommend for overhang supports. If overhang exceeds the maximum amounts, proper brackets, legs or other rigid support must be added by the cabinet maker of builder.
