Default Salmon poisoning

Can dogs get Salmon poisoning from cooked salmon? I cooked up some of the salmon we caught in Alaska tonight. I had cooked it in foil, on the BBQ. When I took it out the skin was stuck on the foil. Like a dummy I forgot to close the BBQ and the wind blew the foil on the ground. My dog ate the skin, no fleshy red meat. I called Dove Lewis and the said she should be ok. Anyone have any difference experience?

First off, Alaska salmon don't have the fluke. And cooking kills it. So you are doubly okay.

Unfortunately the organism is indeed found in Alaska, though probably not as commonly as in the Pacific Northwest. I know it is not unusual to see salmon poisoning disease in the Yakutat area.

Salmon and canines don't mix, any salmonidea can carry the fluke...most in salt water do not, but once entering fresh water they do, even lake trout.

There are several threads on this site that talk about salmon and dogs, it takes 6-10 days for your dog to start showing signs of being sick, and it really is not poisoning at all, but a parasite.

Read up on it if you like, doing a Google search, you will learn a lot about it. If you have a dog that is going to be exposed to fish....you may save your dogs life someday. I did.

Take it from a guy who lost a dog to it. If there is any question, get them the medicine immediately do not wait. It cost about 3200 in med bills and she still ended up losing the battle in the end.

If you have a dog that eats everything it encounters, and you live near a salmon-bearing stream or fish/take the dog fishing with you, it might be a good idea to have a bottle of tetracylcine handy so you can start treating your dog if it shows signs of illness. Dogs deteriorate pretty quickly once they become symptomatic, so it's important to start them on antibiotics soon after you notice symptoms.

Cooked fish isn't a problem.
