Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
We went out Sunday (6-2). Pretty rough over the bar. Ocean was rough too, lot of wind chop and about 6 foot swells with about 10 sec intevals. But boy, what a trip!! Stayed around the CR buoy and nailed them. The biggest we caught was about 20 lbs. Lost a near 30 lb right at the boat. There were alot of sub-legals we let go, but enough legals for us to limit. All in all a fantastic outing....

Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
Congrats on your outing
I want to hit it this weekend and would appreciate any advice you are willing to share. Last year we really put a hurting on the coho in that general area but only put 3 nooks in the boat in a half a dozen trips. I have never fished the big blue until the selective coho season opens but I will be fishing for sturgies in the estuary and would like to hop the bar and give her a shot. Were you doing the cut plug on a diver or were you fishing really deep? Did you have any accidental coho hookups? From what I hear, we are not going to have the fishery for the silvers like we did last year. Thanks in advance for any questions answered.

Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
Tacklebuster,
We were actually using anchovy. At first we were going 40 pulls with divers, but it amazed us that we had several hookups close to the surface when we did bait checks. We actually saw fish chasing our bait. So we started going 10-20 pulls and seemed to do better. Like I said alot of sub-legals, but enough biggens to get our limit. You could probably do well mooching. NO COHO, that was another thing that amazed me Last year we had the same thing as you, we couldnt get past the coho. This time totally different...go figure. Good luck on going out...

Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
LFN,
Thanks for the reply and all the help you had to give. I am gearing up and getting ready. I called Tackletime in Warrenton and she said that the salmon fishing was real slow and to have a shot and putting one in the box, you had to go out about 50 miles  I like the sounds of goint out to the CR a lot better. Were there other boats out there as well? I have a 19 foot sled and kind of like the idea of other boats being in the general area just in case Looks as if we have some flood tides in the morning for this weekend so that will make the bar hoping a little bit better. Thanks again...

Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
TB,
We saw probably 5 other boats out there. There was one working the same area as us and they were doing just as well. We were in a 23 foot sled, they looked to be in a 20 foot fiberglass. We cant go this weekend, but let us know how you do...be careful and good luck

Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
I was out Friday with Coho Charters out of Ilwaco. We fished divers with Anchovie and Herring. 1 Chinook and about 20 Coho for ten rods. We were 7 miles north of Peacock Spit and 10 miles out.
(finally had something to post here!)

Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
Sounds like you were on the wrong charter for Chinooks. You had to release the Coho's, right?

Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
We sure did... but the fish were pretty small this time out. See my post THE OCEAN BEKONS from last week in the general forum

Re: Ocean Salmon out of Columbia
Watch for the potential for breakers in the afternoon as the ebb peaks on the Columbia Bar and Tilly for that matter.
