Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
I have finally convinced my college aged son to part with his dodge diesel pickup.... He is looking at used toyota pickups, and is leaning towards a 6 cyl 4wd. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of their experience with mileage on the 6cyl versus the 4 cyl toyotas... Thanks!

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
If both are fuel injected they are about 18 mpg on the 6 and 23 mpg on the 4. Really depends on what is done to the truck, tires, gears. Oh, this is assuming that it is a 4x4. I do not know anything about 2wd toys. My 82 carb 4cyl. gets right around 18 mpg when driven normal (I have over sized tires). Good luck and stay away from the 3.0 6 cyl. There was a recall on it if you do end up getting one.

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
What years is he looking at? Manual or Automatic? I have a 95 Toyota 4x4 V6 manual transmission.... put a K&N air filter in it... all maint..plugs... valve job ,oil....etc..I get about 17 mpg city.... 20 on hwy road trips to EO.A 4cyl would probably go up 2-3 mpg

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
I'm curious why get rid of the diesel? A buddy of mine just bought a Dodge one ton and he's getting 23 mpg on the highway. Sure the fuel is more, but if there's a major disruption in fuel supplies, he can burn biodiesel. My son has a Toyota Tundra V-8 and he gets 18 mpg. If you get a smaller truck I bet the mileage still won't be what the diesel is now.

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
Why get rid of the diesel... good question. The truck is kind of tired / high maintenance. He gets about 18 mpg. Add to that the diesel price difference to a college kid who commutes 50 miles a day.... Way too many dollars out.
I'm trying to convince him to buy a 30mpg car, but the image thing is still huge at 20 yrs old... It seems the older you get, the less worried you are about how you look, and more concerned about if you can afford it....

I have a 97 4runner with a V-6. I get about 16-18 mpg. My buddy who owned a 94 Tacoma with a 4 cyl was getting 20-22 mpg. Not a whole lo of difference. I would rather go with the V-6 for more power.

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
I've had several toys, bought a new 84 diesel king cab it got about 26 mpg and went 286,000 miles for me. Sold it in 89 and bought a new one with a 22r and
it got a steady 18-20 and went 210,000.In 93 bought a new v6 and it got between 18-22 it was stolen and I replaced it with a 94 with a 4 cyl 22re and
I'm on my 3rd engine! Timing chains went on the first two and they never got
any better than 18mpg. I personally believe the re is a piece of s**t and way
under powered for a 4 wheel drive train. Maybe they've improved with the
Tacoma that I'm not sure of but friends have said they are better trucks.I'd
consider a v6 but I'll never own another 4 22re.Everything else on the truck is tight but that engine is junk in my opinion...Good Luck

2000 with a V-6 and a manual tranny. Eighteen around town, 20 to 21 on the highway. Third yote, last yote. Quality in my opinion just ain't what it once was.

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
I had a extended cab 96 2wd with the small 4cyl in it. I got about 23 mpg, and didn't check it much, but it seemed to get close to that around town as well. For my 2wd, I never had the need for a 6 cylinder. I pulled way more than I should have for the weight of the pickup. The limiting factor was not power, it was stopping. Loved that pickup!

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
I have a 93 toy pu v6 (3.0L) ext cab 4x4 manual w/ 208,000 miles on it. I get 17mpg city and 20-22mpg on the highway. A lot of people like to call v6's pre 1996 the 3.slow because for a v6 that get 17-22mpg it does not produce as much horsepower as the newer post-1996 v6 (3.4L) which are supposed to have much more horsepower for the same fuel consumption or better.
I have come to the conclusion that if you are looking to buy one go with the newer 3.4L engine with a manual.
Since I have 3.slow with a manual I am going to keep it until the motor blows up then swap the motor with a 3.4L from a rolled donor vehicle.
Whatever you do, do not and I repeat do not buy a 3.slow with a auto trans I have heard way too many bad things about poor power and gas mileage.

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
Bought a 4-runner 6cyl 4wd new in 1988, got around 20-22 mpg... put around 270,000 miles on it and was still running strong when I sold it. Had it tuned up a few times, that was about it. Now have a 2007 taco, 6cyl, 4wd and get about 18-20mpg. Great trucks!

Well, don't know what he had, but my powerstroke gets 4.6 MPG better than my toyota EVER did (v-6, 4wd) even with a new motor thanks to head gasket recall... I couldn't top 17mpg if I was coasting downhill behind my grandma.
OH, and don't fall asleep!

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
I have a Toyota T100 1995 with 2.7 liter 4 cyl. It gets about 28 mpg.
I drove it over to Garibaldi last OTC. It ran over the Blue's with out bogging down.
Has a lot of power, but not a great tow vehicle. I have a Wooldridge Alaskan that I use it with occassionally. We are ok here in the valley, but the hills are another issue.

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
My Dodge diesel is cheaper to operate fuel wise than my old 22RE 4x4 Toyota pickup. Who cares if fuel costs more per unit when you burn less of it?

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
I have had a 84 2wd ex cab and then a 94 4wd ex cab, 22r and 22re. The 4wd got 23 hwy until I redid intake and exhaust. (must help them breath better) It went up to 25 hwy which is real good for a 4x4. I gave the 94 to the son and replaced it with a 2004 Dodge Dakota 4x4 quad cab that has WAY more hp and when driven at 60 gets 23mpg on the hwy. The Toyotas are built tougher than my Dodge but I treat my trucks better now that I am old. You can not go wrong with a Yoda

I still wish I would have bought that truck after you wrecked it.
Ive had probably 20 Toyota's.... All as dependable as you make them. As for gas mileage, Never as much as you want, but better than it could be.

Funny that you posted this I was logging onto iFish to ask the same question. I'm looking at selling my 2000 Diesel Superduty for a 2005 or newer V6 Tacoma Double Cab. From what research I've done it seems that 16-18mpg is pretty standard for the V6 Tacomas, I've looked online and talked to friends with Tacomas.
This is the logic that I'm using:
Superduty 15mpg 4.59 p/gal Diesel -- Cost to drive 15K $4,590 ---Fuel Cost p/Month $382
Tacoma 16mpg 3.79 p/gal Gas -- Cost to drive 15K $3,553 ---Fuel Cost p/Month $296
So in fuel that saves approx $1,000 p/year and that doesn't include the cost of the diesel oil changes (15qts) vs gas (6qts). For those of you getting 20-23mpg in your diesel well then that would be a different story, but I've never got that.
I also have a car too, so by selling the PSD and car, and just sticking with a Tacoma I'm figuring I'll save $2K+ per year. I love my truck and hate to get rid of my Powerstroke but it doesn't do me much good when its sitting in the driveway everyday, and come hunting season it could get really spendy to travel all over the country in a diesel.
Good luck and I'm curious to find out what your son decided to do.

Re: Toyota pickup fuel mileage input
I sold my beloved F-150 4x4 about a year to go the Toyota 4x4 route...
For 6 months I drove a '93 5pd. 4 cyl. 22RE 4x4 with 31" AT's and got 18 around town and never better than 20 on the road. I'm not a big guy and the cab was cramped, and I got really tired of getting smoked by Geo's every time I had to climb a little bit of a hill...
About 6 months ago I bought an '01 TRD 3.4L V6 Tacoma 4x4 with a 5 spd. I have the factory rated tires (265/70/16) and worst case scenario around town is about 18.5-19 and sometimes 20...and best mileage ever was 22.5 with the cruise control locked at 68 MPH on straightaway interstate in NM.
If your son does drive off-road, he wants to get the TRD suspension...it articulates like a dream and the rear diff. locker can be a lifesaver.
