Default Ocean Crabbing

Lookin' to take the MacDaddy out on the ocean to get some crabasaurases this weekend, weather permitting. Wondering how much rope I need for a given depth. I saw Pilar say that the shallows were yeilding lots of girlie crabs. How deep ought I go?? I will be either Nehalem or Tillimook.

Any help always appreciated from the pros...

Thanks
PeterMac

Lou Shinen did well out of Nehalem in the ocean a couple weeks back, the first weekend of halibut. Not sure what depth though, probably 50' or so. We did lousy at Newport in 35', 6 crab in 3 days in 3 pots, with about 100 females. Our buddy Puffin pulled like 30 out in 75' on that same friday. So I would drop em out in 75' or deeper. All the commercial gear is out in 100-300, so deeper is obviously better.

If you can't get out in the ocean, don't bother. Crabbing in the bays is nearly non-existant.

For ocean crabbing 30% scope is a minimum, double buoyed. So you need 110+' of line for 75' of water.

Good luck.
