I've been hunting to get ready for hunting. It's the best plan ever. Seriously, spring bear is a must for keeping the body in working order as the years go by.

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
I'm in pretty good road hunting shape Actually, I stay in pretty good hiking shape due to shed hunting and checking trail cams in the off season. I also run 2-3 miles a couple times a week. I could sure stand to throw some weight around just so those meat packs feel a little easier. Wheels.

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
when your busting out that last rep in the gym doing squats and you can feel the burn, just picture that big bull you might get a shot at by going the extra mile LOL.

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
wheels,
I agree on the meat packs ive packed elk a few times about 100-110 pounds of meat on my pack frame for 2 miles and its brutal. The last bull we got it died right by a old skid road so in came the quads LOL, i was already planning on packing it out on our backs until my friend and his cousin brought the quad calvery in LOL. sure made my legs and back feel better.

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
I would focus on lower body an your core. Cardio is important too.
Muscular endurance is more important than strength when your hunting.
The rowing machine or a stationary bike set on hill climb are 2 good excersizes to get in shape for hunting. Dont forget the situps, they will save your back after that 5 mile packout,

the best thing about hunting with a group of guys is that we all help each other when it comes to packing. Nothing like 5 guys packing out a bull. it makes it alot easier.

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
simudbogger,
I agree that you should have a strong core and strong legs, those should be your main focus, along with cardio. I do alot of lower back, and abs as well as squats, hip sled, leg extensions, and hammies, oh and you cant forget the lunges, those will tear you up, i do those at the end of my leg workouts, to finish the legs off.

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
ehunter, by the look of your avatar, you may be physically in shape.
I am in not to bad of shape. Excercise bike for 20-30 min, squats, leg curls, sit ups, and the upper body thing as well. The lungs are never in as good of shape as you think. Just went through a physical at work that put us on the treadmill and boy did it about kill me. The lungs gave out.

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
Been running five miles a day but I still have 20lbs to lose before season if I can. I am down 50lbs since September of last year when I started losing weight and getting back in shape.

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
I have great thoughts of working out like I used to. Schedule and life's responsibilities take most of the day away from this idea.
My knees hurt so dang bad, that after my initial workout, I limp for a week.
I essentially wimp out and quit.
I played football until I was 23 years old. Three sports a year forever. I know what it takes, but at 42 I'm really lazy.
I (k)need to walk a lot to get the knees in shape. Not try to workout with a get in shape quick mentality!!!!!
Good luck,
BU

Re: Whos in hunting shape?
Ridgerunner those are my new hunting glasses.
I think there is a big difference between being in shape and hunting shape, first off the hearing takes a good day to get into shape and the mind to slow down and take in all the sights sounds and smells. The first day for me is almost a bust as I have to get my head into it and slow down and smell the roses so to speak.
The other thing is there is nothing like hunting shape that is when your mind is in the game and your body gets used to walking quitely, bending underneath branches twisting, walking on logs, listen stoping in unnatural postitions, one leg up.
There is getting into walking shape and I do that year round I walk 3 miles a day and in the late summer try to get some backpack over nighters under my belt. You can't fake the 3 am walk with a pack and bow the noon hike in 80 degree weather until it happens
